This is a three part Question.

1. What Knife do you carry in the woods?
2. What Knife would you want to carry in the woods or when the SHTF?
3. What knife would you carry for Personal Protection?
*********************************************************************
1. Buck 119
2. One of the Randalls. http://www.nordicknives.com/front.html
3. The one that was stolen out of my car 10 years ago. http://knifedealer.net/kershaw/trooper.shtml

Dont know about the first two, butttt....

CC Knife: KA-BAR with 7" blade, black epoxy finish and polymer grips. That's what I use now, and if you're got to get up close and personal, I figure you ought to use the best.

Schrade Sharp Finger and Schrade Gut Hook go with me to the woods!! Probably would have those two when the SHTF, BUT, When the SHTF I ain't pullin' a knife!!! It'll be a GLOCK!!! Don't ever pull a knife on me or you'll meet the GLOCK! I've had that rule about pulling a knife on me since I was 16 years old!! I've had the barrel of a 9mm in my nose! Disarmed the guy and put him down!! If he'd pulled a knife on me I would have dismembered him!!! Probably with his own weapon!! Pull a gun but don't ever pull a knife on me!! GHD

I have carried the Buck for years and I use it for every job that requires a knife. Specialty knives do help when doing certains jobs though, like gutting or skinning.

If I knew then, what I know now.

I've got a nice old Schrade that I wore again just recently in its leather scabbard after shining it up with the proper chemicals. It has an attractive polished handle, sort of a small Bowie shape, but I can't even tell you what it is -- the handle is white with a deep tan ingrained portion on either side. Could be horn, I guess. I'm not sure if it's a good, bad or indifferent knife, but it's a nice length, maybe 5 or 6 inches, for carry in the woods. I have two M3 bayonets Dad gave me which I would carry for more serious defense if I were "suiting up" just because they're available and they're strong, but I'm not a knife weapons person, I'm a gun man.

I have been collecting plastic knives as a hobby, various models which apparently their makers think may have some "stealth" value. They're always only a few bucks at gun shows and there are scads of them which mostly don't sell well. Most are foolish toys, but one or two of them could really hurt a person. I also acquired a vintage machete a while back, which comes in handy for utility jobs in the yard from time to time.

Let's put it this way. I may carry a knife occasionally that has some defensive value, but I don't plan on using it for that, considering my CCW. Until recently, I haven't considered that I have the necessary mindset for employing a knife for defense.

I always carry two knives wherever I am.

Big one is a Gerber Applegate Covert. Easy one hand opening. Good balance. Useful as a utility knife, but a good fighting blade as well.

Little one is an Imperial electrician knife. I like the screwdriver blade.

I keep both shaving sharp with my Lansky kit.

A SCHRADE, Presto Switchblade, made back around 1913- 1940, 5 1/4 inches closed, 9 1/2 inches opened, has folding blade guard, works great with one hand, and sharpens like a razor. Try it you will like it

I don't know about the knife in the woods, but I do carry a knife for personal protection. I don't really know the inches, but it's stainless steel and it's from "Carter Country, Sugar Land TX. I carry it with me everyday. It beats not having anything at all that's for certain.

I carry a little Gerber folder in my pocket. Not all that big but in an emergency, I'll bet I can gut a perp from belly to brisket REAL quick.
In the woods, I carry my USMC Ka-Bar.

I carry a Case knife with 2 long sharp blades while in the Woods. I can shave the hair off my arm with either blade. I live in a Pine Forest. Questions 2 or 3 are simple. You never go to a gun fight with a knife as your primary weapon.

If you don't care where you are going, you can't get lost.

I carry a GERBER applegate covert for defense and a spyderco anniversary edition for utility. I disagree with Nunn about the applegate being good for utility, it sucks for anything but combat! I do agree that it is well balanced and easy for one hand use. It also feels good clipped to your belt or pants, you'll forget that it's there.

    hey all!

By the majority of answers I received for Question #3 I would have to assume that most of you carry a Gun every time you go out of the house. Well good for you, unfortunately I don't have that Option especially when I work on NAS JAX Naval Base where I had to sign a paper stating if they find a gun on my person or vehicle "It Will Be Confiscated And Destroyed". That leaves me Defenseless going to and from work, and in any Store or Bank I stop in after work.

    KA-BAR KA-BAR KA-BAR

I'd have one ol' beat up one for chopping at logs cut for firewood in order to make kindling. I'd have another for attaching to the end of a long pole for sticking wild boars because I just love pork and can think of no better delicacy if the stuff ever did hit the fan and needed to live off the land. I'd keep the other one nice and sharp and pretty just because the KA-BAR is such a beautiful thing.

Always carry a knife. If dressed up will carry a Hubertus 3" automatic, for casual wear will carry either a Michael Walker CRKT 4", or a SOG Pentagon Elite 4". In the desert will carry either a Randall Model 14 Attack, or a SOG Bowie.

Then of course always have an extra Large Ontario Bowie strapped to my backpack for chopping, digging, etc.
