Well guys I really debated mentioning this to you all because deep down inside I'm usually really selfish....but then I thought, "What the hell..these guys..even the one with whom I argue are good guys." So with that said the US Army just turned over to the CMP the very last 1903 Springfield rifles that they had. There will be no more ever. They are now for sale on the CMP web site, www.odcmp.com . The prices vary with the model and obvious collectability but in any case the will only go up and up and up in value. Some of the late Remingtons and Smith Coronas command the highest prices but that really makes sense because some of them really saw little use in the war after 1942. I know a lot of you "spray and pray" fanatics will find little use for one of these rifles and some of you may argue that the 1917 Enfield was a superior weapon but in fact these are considered the smoothest military bolt guns ever made. And simply put...there are no more after this other than through private hands. Hope you guys send your moneyu for these weapons early because they won't last long at these prices. Beach

I'm a member of one of the affiliated clubs, but I haven't been in any CMP sponsored matches or other programs. Can I still buy one?

I just reviewed the order form and it did not exempt military from being a member. It does not sound like it is easy to become elegable to purchase a rifle from them on first review.

You must be a member of the CMP regardless of military status but you do not have to participate in matches in order to purchase firearms if you meet the following criteria:Active duty military, Reserves and Retirees - Submit a copy of your military ID card. Veterans - Submit a copy of your DD214 (discharge papers showing honorable discharge. Age 60 or older - Submit proof of age. Handicapped or disabled and cannot participate in a qualifying match - submit a physicians report with application.

I'm not a member of any affilitated clubs, but am in the military, which is why I'm not affillitated with any clubs. These rules suck, to say the least, seems as if they are trying to exclude people from being able to be a member, not get members. Anyone want to order me a 1903A3 Remington w/c stock, and I'll send you the money? If so let me know, ok? Robs

I e-mailed them to see if they had any west coast events or clubs. If not I second the SSgt.

SSgt Roberts, I agree all those forms are a pain in the butt to fill out. But once filled out you have access to a literal Pandora's box of toys. While I was on active duty as CO of BMU1 about 20 of my men wanted to get their M1's. I wrote on my command letterhead that they were shooters and had access to a Navy range as well as their current military rifle qualification( i.e Expert, Sharpshooter, Marksman). The CMP accepted my letter at its face value and none of them were required to join a CMP club. If your Skipper is willing to do that it would save you the $20 a year membership fee in the California Rifle and Pistol Association. After your name is recorded there you have a cornacopia of neat stuff you can buy cheaper than anywhere else on the planet. My brother who just yesterday sent off his application and cash for a high numbered Smith Corona told me he was at a gunshow today where he saw a couple selling for between $700-$800. Yeah that's not a lot more than the $500 he paid but it's still $200-$300 in his pocket not theirs.Every year I go to Camp Perry to buy 168 grain Lake City Match .308 ammo. It costs $207 per 460 round can for the best .308 match ammo in the world. I can sell those cans for whatever the market will bear. And someone is always ready to pay me $250 or $260 a can. I know that nobody can get it for less than $207 and they usually have to pay $20 shipping. The CMP enables all of us to get this stuff at rock bottom prices. And once you are registered you can buy at anytime virtually as much as you want. It really is worth the effort. Beach

beachmaster73, I don't mind joining the club you mentioned. Do you know of any shooting events that will qualify me for the 50 round rule?Jim

Jim, A quick check on the CMP site and I saw the Coalinga Rifle Club and a couple of clubs in the high desert. There is a range in Dulzura, south of you that has numerous CMP events. I used to shoot there as well. Just call one of the club up ask them when they are having a match. Even if you don't belong to the club they'll let you shoot (usually costs you an extra couple bucks) you take the results and mail them to the CMP and presto you have your 50 round course requirement completed. good luck in the quest. beachmaster, I think I'm going to try what you said, I have all the literature here already to join, last time I read it I got frustrated and just filed it in my box of reading material. I dont think I'll be able to pull it off before the 03s are all gone though. With my PCS move imminent within the next 5 months, I'm sort of screwed. I dont know that they will still do for me what they did for your men, but its worth a shot. I wouldnt mind being a member of an affilitated club, just arent any here in my area of Missouri, I'm sure there are in San Diego though. Again, I think I'll miss the boat on the 03s. Thanks for the suggestion and encouragement.

SSgt, I went back to the CMP site and found that Escondido is the closest for you from Camp Penelton. It just so happens that I live in a little town on the east side of the base so I know the area well. Let me know when you hit town and I can help you find the place. My boys and I did our hunters safty course there.

robsguns--If you're ever shooting in the Escondito area, look out for an avid shooter by the name of Greg Vant'Land. I swear I'd pay an arm and a leg to track him down but have run dry on leads. He knows his stuff and would make an awesome shooting buddy.
