tranny question

have a question for you tranny savvy guys. What is a reasonable amount for an overhaul?? I am visiting my son in San Antonio and my tranny started slipping. Since I live in MS I took it to AAMCO because of their nation wide guarantee. They have called me several times saying it needs this and that and now we are up to almost two grand. They say planitary gears torque converter, etc. Does this sound reasonable to you?? Thanks, Tom

PS They just called again and I told them I didn't want to buy the damn store, I just wanted to get on the road. bottom line is 1900
OH yes, the truck is 1995 f150 6 cyl

It is most likely an e4OD transmission. 1900 is rape job for sure.I would call around and see how much a rebuilt trans swap would cost. If it just started slipping suddenly it is most likely a smaller problem (bad solonoid or such) stop by the shop and look in the trans pan bottom and if it is full of metal particles it most likely ground up some clutch plates and it washed thru the tranny BUT 1900 is a rape job for sure. How many miles on this beast?

I would look around some more, but if AAMCO has already tore it apart you might as well let them do it, because when they did mine they charged me about 350.00 just for diagnostic fees. I made the mistake of going to AAMCO one time. Never again.

I had to let them go ahead and do the deed at around 1900. I called Ford and that is what they wanted for their rebuild. Wish I had called them first but hopefully, I will be reapired and on the road tomorrow. Too darn bad this didn't happen at homne and I could have shopped around for a used one. Thanks for all replikes, Tom

PS I too will NEVER use AAMCO again@!!

You can probably get a remanufactured trans for around 1,200 and a case of beer for a buddy to put it in.

You can snatch one from a rebuild yard, For around $350.00. These are factory low mile trannies.

You could have went over to www.Ford-trucks.com there is a wealth of information over thier.

Had an '84 silverado....long story, short version.....trans went out took it to AAmco to be fixed. Seven rebuilds and two fires later they said it was costing them to much money(Warranty). sold the truck.

Why do they make it taste so good and put it in them little bitty cans- Dad

I guess it varies a lot by location. Here in TN, less than a thousand for non OD, maybe 1200 or so for OD..

There are no bad guns, only bad people.

The E40D they have had a lot of problems with, some the selenoid goes out and overdrive won't work, but most aren't very good transmissions, it's not just ford either, I have rebuilt more transfercases and transmissions for them than one could believe, the ford ranger transmissions, so are the S-10 5 speeds, are junk also, toyo's, mitsibishi's, transfercases 208 new process, borg warner 1356, 45's also.
Use to have a small parts yard, still got a E40D around I believe
For you guys with the Ford Twin I - Beam Junk, they eat tires, hard to line up, tires look like their falling off after backing up, I have a simple fix for what it would cost to put ball joints, axel joints in one .... solution .... 79 F-250 Straight Axel front end, move the spring pads 2-1/2" towards the wheels & slide it right up under the front, track arm, u-bolts is mostly all thats needed, some you may have to install the F-350 tie rods, arms etc.
I use to be The Ford Man in these parts, thinking of taking it back up for a hobby, people still call have you got this or that ?, what do I need to do this ?
    Was a lot of fun.

Jack up the radiator cap and drive a Chevy under it.
325,000 miles on my 1500 and still the original motor and tranny.
Had to change the flex plate and it gets serviced regularly.
    My Chevy is a 1994, 4.3l, 4speed automatic overdrive.

Ammco was the worst place to take it. I have a place here that when
my tranny finally goes he will do a rebuild for about $1000.

    No beers for this guy.
He is honest and doesn't like to over charge people.
He has been a local tranny shop for 25 years here.

I rebuild transmissions for a living among other things. Did you know those rebuild kits cost us about $40-50 if we buy them in bulk?

A tranny shop is a very profitable business. We get our convertors rebuilt to save money and those solenoids and sensors aren't expensive either.

Sorry to hear you got raped. Those big tranny shops don't exactly hire the smartest kids on the block. The good tranny guys open their own little shops.

I'd suggest going to the little guys for repair rather than the big shops.

From talking to friends who have had tranny rebuileds in the last cople of months, yours was a tad high but not outrageously so..A buddy just had his done, out of town like you,for 1500.00,and another friend paid about 1400.00.
On al nolder rig it almost isn't worth it,but then if you replace it with a used rig,who knows what might be about to go out on it..

If it'll make ya feel any better,I paid 600.00 for a carburetor last year that lasted less than two days.had to get under the hood and turn the idle up and drive thirty miles home at 30 mph.grrrrrrr!
Did get it replaced free, but it SHOULD NOT have happened.

Throckmortons' the alias, cas is the game.
