I hve a Rem stainlss 700 and true to form Rem cut's corners and used a chincy light weight barrel -shoulda kept my stainlss Win/375H&H, now that had a magnum barrel- which is the same outside diameter as my sons 308-cal barrel in a rem/700 Over the years gun writers have written that a paper thin barrel has more vibration, heat's up quicker and are not -with follow up shots- as accurate as heavier, stiffer barrels. So why the heck does rem use a thin 24" barrel for a mag caliber...are they that tight? Anyway, who would you recommend to rebarrel it with a heavier 26" stainlss barrel? I am in no rush but would like to have it before the end of Sept...should I send it back to rem and see if the custom shop would do it?

Not to sound smart alecky, but have you shot this rifle very much? You talk about gun writers and what they say, but what does the rifle do? I really can't think of too much that can handle 3 of those rounds (the amount you can usually get out of a cold barrel before heat problems) and still function.

If you hunt like I do, you'll carry that rifle a lot more than you'll shoot it and the lighter weight could be a blessing.

I am not thin skinned and I would never take you written words as being smarl alecky! I shoot my 338 win mag with my t-shirt on...quite often actually...so this whimpy 375 ain't gonna bother me...LOL

I would suggest you shoot that wimpy barrel and see what it does before you decide to swap it out. I have owned a couple of different 375 H&H's and not one of them would shoot groups larger than 1.5" with the right powder under the Speer 285 Grand Slam. One was a BRNO ZKK602 with a thin barrel and another was a Rem 700 Safari Grade from the custom shop with a .820 muzzle. Both shot equally as well as the other with the right load.

    Mike,
I saw you on another post you were in Kansas City. There is guy in Central MO who builds rifles mostly off of 700 actions. He used to live in my town and I have his card at work. E-Mail me at crewsn@yhti.net if you like and I will send you his number.

Sorry about the bad info. I swore they did more than just .22 barrels. Open mouth. Insert foot.
