Weapons charge for Jets' Robinson The Associated Press10/16/01 6:43 PMEAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Damien Robinson of the New York Jets was charged with possession of an assault rifle found in his car as he entered Giants Stadium. The arrest took place several hours before the Jets beat the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Robinson, a free safety, was released on his own recognizance in a hearing over the telephone, played in the game and was arraigned afterward, state police Sgt. Al Della Fave said. Robinson has a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Della Fave said. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted. It was not clear why the 27-year-old defensive back was carrying the assault weapon and ammunition in his sport utility vehicle. "At this time, our only comment regarding the situation with Damien Robinson is that we plan to let the legal system play its course," Jets general manager Terry Bradway said Tuesday. "Because this is a legal matter, we are not at liberty to discuss the case." The players were off Monday and Tuesday, and Robinson was unavailable for comment. A message was left with his agent, James Gould. Robinson was entering the players' parking lot at about 10 a.m. with his family when police searched his car, a procedure that has been in place for players, team and game officials and media since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Della Fave said. A bomb-sniffing dog checked the vehicle, and "he reacted positively to the presence of explosives" in the back of the car, Della Fave said. Robinson then told authorities he had a rifle, clips and ammunition in the back, Della Fave said. Police found a Bushmaster .223 assault rifle, three high-capacity magazines that hold 30 rounds each, and two boxes of ammunition containing 100 rounds each. The rifle and the magazines are illegal under a 1990 state law that bans the sale and possession of many kinds of automatic weapons. http://www.nj.com/newsflash/index.ssf?/cgi-free/getstory_ssf.cgi?j0215_BC_NJ--RobinsonCharged&&news&newsflash-newjersey

Heh heh heh. This reminds me of my attempt to enter a certain military installation after a day at the range. The guns were left at the home of a trusted friend but the ammo cans containing the ammo were accidentally grabbed instead of the cleaning kits. It took a moment or two to explain how I came into private possession of NATO-head-stamped ammunition and blanks when most military personnel are under the assumption that they are the only ones that have access to it. The explosives K-9 reacted and I discovered that you can have all the ammo in the world in your vehicle on this particular installation so long as there are no guns in the vehicle.
