Another stupid AR15 question

Can anyone tell me where to find info on what can/can't be done to a post ban AR. There are so many people spreading rumor of what is and isn't legal-just wondering if you can put a 4 position colapsing stock on a post ban AR.I thought this wasn't allowed, but I saw an auction for an AR that was postban originally with standard fixed stock, but had 4 position colapser added, and was wondering if I could get away with doing this to my own.[This message has been edited by bhale187 (edited 10-11-2001).]

Not unless your LEO/Government agency. Check the BATF website when in doubtLimit of not more than 2 for post ban (9-13-94) guns;1. Collapsable/Retractable stock2. Threaded Barrel3. Pistol grip that protrudes conspicously below stock.4. Detachable Mag5. Flash HiderAR-15 has Pistol Grip and Detachable Mag ... thats 2, thats the limit!

Then there is the school of thought that is legal till ya get caught. I pity the DA that tries to prosecute a stupid case re: a stock.Andy

They really prevented a lot of crime with that stupid "not more than 2" listI can envision this scenario at your local 7-11:"Abdul, give him the money! That gun has a threaded barrel and a collapsible stock!" Gimme a break!!!Mudge

Yeah, the bayonet lug is a pretty deadly accessory. I for one would like to put a stop to all these drive-by bayonettings.

I pity the fool that puts a telescoping stock on a post ban rifle. IMO, it's not worth the potential headache. The key word being 'potential'!

Thanks all.Kimber, I couldn't remember if it was 2 or 3 of the "assault weapon" criteria that would potentially get you in hot water.Thanks-Ben

Kimberkid, don't mean to offend, but the actual definition of assault rifle is:(B) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of - (i) a folding or telescopic stock; (ii) a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; (iii) a bayonet mount; (iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and (v) a grenade launcher; the complete '94 ban regulations can be found on:mini14world.comit's a good sight to bookmark just to have the assault weapons ban handy.[This message has been edited by boeboe (edited 10-11-2001).]

Would the 37mm flare launcher accessory be considered a "grenade launcher" since you can get the parts to use your own "payload" and they could potentially be used as grenade launchers with that in mind?

The 37 mm flare launcher is okay. The 40 mm is not.The grenade launcher provision is about the funniest part of the ban. You would think that if a person had the grenades, that would be enough of a crime.Guess they had to do something to control all the grenade launch murders and drive by bayonetings.

Pretty sad state of affairs when even the cops can't find out what the law is.

There are fixed stocks for AR15s looking exactly like the folders for sale.

boeboe,Thanks for the correction! When I made that list something didn't seem right but I couldn't put my finger on it.Where does the forward grip fit into the Banned list?(edit)In reading the Btaf regs I se where it is illegal to attach a forward grip to a Pistol shch as the HK SP-89, but nothing reguarding rifles/long guns.As some of you may know I recently purchased a Steyr USR, why is it illegal to use an (non-thumbhole) AUG stock? It would still be a USR ... not an AUG, it has no threaded barrel, no folding or telescopic stock, no bayonet mount, no flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor and no grenade launcher ... the pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon would be the only banned feature I can find about it.

Anything is legal in your home, you could have fully automatice m60 in your living room, but take it onto the porch, and you are a criminal.

I feel the need to give the pot one more good stir. I bought an 870 Express 12 gauge shotgun when I was 21. I then ordered a pistol-grip stock and a 10-round mag tube for it. The mag tube and stock arrived as ordered but it came with a letter from the BATF stating that I could install one or the other but not both simultaneously. I had the little dimples drilled out so that the mag tube could be installed but left it in the closet and installed the stock instead.
