Scheels Sporting Goods is hypocritical

My buddy got a Benilli M1 and wanted to get a pistol grip stock for it. So he called Scheels in the Oakwood Mall in Eau Claire, WI since he had a gift certificate for there. They told him they wouldn't order something like that because "it had no sporting purpose". Wish I'd been there in person cause I'd have asked them about the outrageous knife and sword display that was down the ilse and around the corner and what the sporting purpose of those were. I think it's safe to say they've lost my business as well as my buddy's. Anybody else had this experience at other places of business? Green Lantern

I'd check first to see what company policy is....could just be a sales person full of himself. Scheels is one of my favorite stores to visit, better gun selection than some of the Cabela's. I know some of these chains try to stay clear of stocking anything military or assault type looking. I was told by one chains sales person they don't want the publicity associated if a mass shooting occured using an assault firearm purchased from their store. A sporting firearm portrays a different image. You may or may not agree....but it's their store and their financial neck that would be on the line.Scheels in Fargo, ND and Iowa City are two of the finest sporting goods stores I've ever seen. I'll keep doing business with them.....and buy my assault type goodies at the gun shows.

scheels company policy is no assault weapons. They will not sell Ar-15's for this reason. Their reloading stuff is way overpriced also.

Why in the hell should a sporting goods store sell ARs,and pistol grips for shotguns.I don`t have anything against these things, but man,if I want them,I don`t go to a sporting goods store lookin` for them!!! .218

You guys have made some good points! What about an M1A? That seems to skirt the line between assault rifle and hunting/target rifle. I've seen one there and I know someone who happened to buy one that was on display. But don't you think there's a difference between an assualt rifle sitting on the shelf for everyone to see and a gun 'part' that they order for someone specific and isn't put on the shelf? Seems to me that there's a distinct difference.

Probably should have clarified this but my buddy wanted a full stock w/ pistol grip, not just a pistol grip. But 218BeeKeep got me thinking. Last year I decided to use my 870 w/ slugs for deer season. I picked up a B-Square mount to put my HoloSite on it, which I might add, I purchased at Scheel's prior to this incident. But now whenever I touch off a round that site mount slams into the first knuckle of my trigger finger. Let's just say it doesn't feel too good! If I use it this year I'm going to get a full stock with pistol grip and that should change where my hand is. So, to me there's a sporting purpose in that type of stock.

GreenLantern,I suppose that would be a different story, but I like a traditional stock on a hunting rifle/shotgun.I`m not very famillier with the B-square mount, but now that you mention it,I could see that happening with their mount.I suppose the Weaver system, which mounts from one side(left),would be my way out.The low mount ,of course.Glad you mentioned it,you may have saved me trouble,I traded off about 12 sets of weaver mounts for 870s,figured if I ever wanted to mount one ,I`d buy B-square,Now I won`t.Thanks,.218

Greenlantern, I'd agree that a pistol grip stock for a slug gun is pretty nice....I have that set up for my Benelli M1 Super 90. But it's not very handy for bird hunting, then I change back to the conventional stock.

I've picked up a few guns from Scheels and a Leupold scope over the last few months. The employees there are very helpful and very knowledgable and most have political views leaning towards our side. However, Scheels is a sporting goods store and they want to maintain that image. Would I go to a Lincoln dealership if I wanted to accessorize my Lincoln Town Car (no I don't own one) to look like a stereotypical "ghetto sled"? No. More than likely they wouldn't do it because there is a certain image that Lincoln wants to maintain even though they probably have the capability of ordering the parts I want. I'm not telling you that your pistol grip would make your gun an "assault weapon" but that is the impression of the general public and the general public is what formulates the ideas that shape the image of the store. If you want that pistol grip, there are plenty of places to go. When I wanted to add a full pistol gripped stock on my 870 Express years ago when I had little knowledge of firearms, I took it to a gun store with racks of AK-47's and similar "politically incorrect" firearms because I knew what their political leanings were. Scheel's is a good store (slightly overpriced) and they are a great place to outfit the hunter but I wouldn't knock them too hard if they have a specific image that they want to maintain.
