St. Louis on Saturday

I managed to swing a couple of box seats for the Cardinals/Cubs game this Saturday and suddenly realized that I have never stopped in St. Louis before. I've only passed through. What's the night life like there? Any places to avoid? Any places one MUST see?

Try getting a hold of Bob in STL on TFF, if you haven't already.

St.Louis is a great city, with lots to do and see. It has been 20 years since I lived there, so I can't give you many pointers, but check the phone book for Rich and Charlies Resturants. Best salad you will ever eat, and the pasta is out of this world. Get directions to "The Hill," the old Italian neighborhood. Find Amageties(probably spelled wrong) bakery for the best sub sandwich you ever ate. The bars come and go so check with locals. Usually some good ones in the central west end.

I'm finding myself in the mood for BBQ/Smokes meats (especially pork). Bob in St. Louis (from "the other forum") is giving me some pointers too. Now that I think about it, I was in St. Louis many many years ago as a young boy.....or should I say......younger boy.

idsman, if you're into Italian food, go to "The Hill" and search out a place called Bertonelli's or something like that (can't find my electronic entry at the moment). Man, that had some of the very best food I've ever had and the prices were a fraction of what one would expect for the quality. One warning: do *NOT* try to find a good restaurant in STL on a Sunday. Virtually every place better than MacDonald's is closed. I've never before seen a city where the restaurants all close on Sunday - but St. Louis is a gastronomic ghost town that day.

Can't tell you about the night life. Not into that. Budweiser has a fun tour. The arch is interesting and presently has quite an exhibit on Lewis & Clark. The fine arts museum has a few interesting exhibits, but my reaction was that it was not on the same par as those of the East & West Coasts. I don't remember the areas to stay out of, but there were definitely several.

Rich and Charlies is a wonderful place to eat. There are many Italian spots on "The Hill". Rigazzi's is a hot spot, they serve beer in "fishbowls". When you are at the stadium head east toward the river about two blocks to the Landing. They will party a long time down there, especially with the Cubs in town. If you are coming down I-44 (which I believe you will, you are a Leonard Wood still right?). Take the 18th St. exit, dumps in a crappy looking neighborhood. Go two lights, take a left for 3-4 blocks, this will drop you out by the Savvis Center take a left and go two blocks to get to Union Station. They have a Hooters, Casa Gallardo, etc. in there it's mostly like a mall. Some night life around there too. There is a place called Molly Maquires on the west side of Union Station, it's an OK sports bar type place with decent eats too.

    KC

PS. Sorry I can't remember more of the street names for you, it isn't too complicated to get around in that area. Don't stray too far north from there however.

Downtown just south of old train station give Harry's a shot, adjacent to the train station Maggie McGuires is a good place for drinks and bar food. If you make it down to the 'Hill' Del Pietro's is a good Italian restaurant.

If time permits spend some time at the Arch. Great 'Movement West' museum at the base.

I was in ST Louis last August for a week. I had never been there before, but it became one of my favorite places. Had a great time, and even got to see the Cardinals & Astros play on Tuesday night. got to see Mark McGuire hit is 13 homer of the last season he played, but Houston still won. Check out the mall that they have in the old train station that is not to far from Bush stadium. If the Arch is open go up, and take a look around. The night life is great too, and check out the Cardinals & Bowling hall of fame just across the street from the stadium.

    Good Luck.

Go to Ted Drewes after the game for some frozen custard. If you are adventurous enough, do "The Test." Turn it upside and see if it stays in the cup! I'm from a suburb of St. Louis but I'm away for college right now in northern Missouri. I want to go back home soon, but I think I'll be going to Des Moines to see my brother this weekend.

    Hey IDS,

I remember that there was something I was disappointed with when I was in ST Louis.

You know how much of a * powder enthusiast I am? Well, I looked all through the phone directory there for anything on the Hawkin Brothers, and I couldn't find anything. I asked at the Hotel I was staying at, and they looked at me with crossed eyes. There is a museum in the bottom of the Arch, so I went they're thinking I would find something, but came up empty.

I always have read where ST Louis was the gateway to the West, and it was from there that a lot of the Old Mountain men like Jim Bridger started their journey west. Most after having equipped themselves with a Hawkin rifle, one of the finest smoke-poles ever built in the US.

    Enjoy your trip.

My buddy and I will be heading out at about 8:30 am on Saturday because it's about a 2-hour drive from here. We'd like to get to the game early and maybe pick up on some tailgate action. He's whining right now because he just bought a BMW in Germany and doesn't have any money. Oh well. Looks like he'll have to watch me eat!

TS--There's a lot of great American history from the "frontier days" right here in the midwest. Gotta love it!
