Go to this site to download a free atomic clock utility:
www.find.pcworld.com/30243 It provides a way to sync your computer's clock with the US atomic clock to maintain perfect time
(or around +/- .5 sec.).
If you want some "inside" info on your computer speed, memory, etc.,
go to www.find.pcworld.com/30662 and download their CPU control panel.
Both items are freebies from pcworld.

If someone got out in the wildernes, got lost and was low on batteries - Oh-(Beeeeeep).
But it's interesting that it can be done though, eventhough I don't quite believe there'd be a use for atomic presision for computer-clocks. Or that it really can be or will be set totally correct - with atomic accuracy.

Just owns a silenced 22LR Anshutz =o) .308Win Steyr Mannlicher - Scout
That's all I need, but not all I want.
Don't do anything I've allready done - That'd just be plain stoooopid. =o)
farmers here ..me included use gps for agriculture uses for spraying crops, measuring field size marking locations of noxious weed patches ectectect it is not a toy for us here it is a tool that a lot of us use for production ag. almost 90+% OF sprayers use gps for guidance for staying on right path for spraying so to avoid over laps or skips
just about all new combines have onboard computers for yield mapping fields via on board gsp units, some planters have the abillity to have computer programs tell the planter what plant population to plant in certain areas of field due to different soil conditions and ect.

ps the clock on my computer was always wrong now it is correct with the atomic clock down load.
I think that GPS and the like is great, but what did you do when they were not out and affordable.

If you read the message "correctly" - I only stated that atomic clocks were of no practical use, at least for most people around.
A simple Swatch arm-clock prised at 6US$ will be sufficient for many, if not all users. (yes, I know the program was meant for computers..!!)
And I do know GPS's are used for several, really helpful and great purposes.
Here GPS's are used for hiking for tourists, local people usually knows the territory and know where they are.
It is also widely used for boating - taking a weekend off in a boat, roaming around hunting for reindeer and such.
But people can still do that with a simple map and a compass.
THAT'S why I said that GPS's and Atomic clocks would just be an expencive way to tell - that you got lost exactly THERE at THAT exact time of day.
I and many other people hate being reliable on something that runs on batteries - offcourse it's easier in many cases - including navigating by GPS.
But here in the complex system of fiords (I believe they're called that.. fiord = channel, or river-like waterways..), it is really helpfull to have all the places with shallow waters marked.
No GPS-map with the shallow waters can be bought here, you'd have to mark them by yourself on the GPS-map you buy for your system.
So there, you'd still need some knowledge of reading a map and using a compass.
If GPS is all a person says he needs - he will still feel lucky to have a compass if the darn thing went Hey-wire.

The GB servers use a multi-layer time hierarchy where a master server sets itself to atomic time and the rest of the servers sync themselves to the primary server. That way our servers are always set to the correct time.

(It also Sucks!)
400 million cows can't be wrong ( EAT GRASS !!! )
We have farmers that get compost from us and they know exactly where to apply it in any field of theirs. They've shown me color maps that show which areas of their fields produced low yields. Pretty cool!!
Also, we are planning a major construction project as soon as all of the permiting process is complete. Our engineers have already started mapping the the new and old areas (for closure proceedures) for elevation. They have a four-wheeler rigged up with a G.P.S. unit that feeds a computer all the information as they drive the four-wheeler across the area that is to be mapped. Take the computer back to their office, download the info and they have both 3-D and numerical (old fashioned) maps. Pretty neat!
"Just my opinion."
no problem....guess i miss understood your comment as to be critical of the technology mentioned .i understand your comment about batteries and ect :-) this tech stuff is not with out some flaws..everyonce in awhile we dont always get signal for gps, for what reason i dont know.
I dont wear a watch can normally tell pretty close to what time it is by the position of sun...i spend probably 90% of my life outside working so have become acustom to time of day by sun position or when stomach growls saying its time to go eat dinner..supper.:-)
so i understand what you are saying
