Went to a funeral today

One of our recruits was killed this weekend. He was a high school senior who enlisted this summer and had dreams about being a soldier. I spend the weekend running all over the place catching up with old friends and relatives that I hadn't seen since June and didn't catch any of the details. There are rumors of foul play floating around the community. It was the first time I attended a funeral for someone so young. 17-year-old boys aren't supposed to go that way.

17-year-olds aren't supposed to go "ANY" way. To bad about the kid.

Was it a hit and run?

Man, that stinks. It isn't fair. I just recently watched my 21-year-old cousin put in the ground. Killed in a car wreck.

Kids that age just don't usually get sick and die. If the reaper catches up with one, it is usually fast and traumatic.

    My sympathies.

My condolences, Sgt. I guess it's a good lesson that Old Scratch comes knocking on the door for all of us sooner or later, and when he does, we haven't got any choice but to let him in.

And, as I'm sure many vets will tell you, nobody realizes that better than someone who's seen it up close. Someone who's put his * in the line of fire for this country.

And I have a sad suspicion that before this time next year, we'll see a lot of young men getting a plot in Arlington and a lot of mothers getting the "the Department of the Army deeply regrets to inform you" telegram.

But, that possibility is just something you have to accept. When you signed that paper and raised your right hand, it wasn't an idle promise. You are signing in blood. Especially if you're going into a combat arms job.

And, I think I'm okay with that. There are simply things in life that are bigger than me. I know the bitter old men and the conspiracy theorists will call me a deluded sheep, but honestly what is the alternative? To live my life without the slightest concern about the preservation of my freedom, and then to run and hide when the bad men come to take it away from me?

Jefferson's quote about the tree of Liberty is never more true than today. We've allowed ourselves to be lulled into the idea that freedom and security is free and permanently enduring. Well now we are once again seeing that it isnt. And it will never be, unless people are willing to die to defend it.

I put my ear to the ground today. It sounds like he was riding with some friends who had been drinking at a party. They dropped him off on a remote road and sped away only to turn around to go back and tell him something. Apparently they approached him at dangerous speeds and the driver hit him. The passengers and driver were so freaked out that they split and left him there to die. His body was discovered the next day.

This is the word on the street. I can't seem to pull up the newspaper article on it. In cases like this, strings are often pulled and the family receives the life insurance payout that they would have received if he had already left for Basic Training. I think the current dollar amount is around $250K right now.
