How do you go about getting your permit here in N.Y.? I can't find any info on the web. Can someone give me a quick run down of what I need to do? THANKS, "Gun folk, is good folk" =

NYS pistol permits are issued by your county of residence. You need to go to your county clerks office and get an application. after that every county is different. You have to supply personal references. Some counties make you get them notarized others don't. You'll need to be fingerprinted by your local sherrifs dept. You need 4 passport photos, some counties still insist they be black and white on a light backround, others don't. Ten years ago when I got mine Monroe co. made you purchase a gun first. you couldn't possess it till your permit came but you had to buy it first. Now it's changed. Talk to your county clerk on that. If you have a dealer that will hold the piece for you, you can save the fee for registering the first one by sending the reciept marked "paid in full" with your application. But they might not let you do that anymore, so ask first. Also find out if your county stamps restrictions on your permit. If you put target shooting on your permit application, and they restrict, your permit will only be good to & from a range. Some counties will automatically reject you for putting self defense for your reason. On mine I put "informal target shooting" & "hunting" But monroe county doesn't restrict so it doesn't matter. Here's what it cost me ten years ago. Application $5.00(not to apply for the ap itself)Pictures $25.00 (you have to pay a studio)Notaries 4x $5.00Fingerprints= Free!!!Parking downtown $3.00 twiceAplication fee to state was $110.00 I believeIt took me 2 months to get my stuff together & 8 months for the state to get it back to me. Usually the hold up is the county judge that signs it when it all comes back. My paperwork was done in 7 weeks, the rest of the time it was on the judges desk.I hope this doesn't discourage you. start by calling your county clerk. If you live in NYC it's a whole different story. I assume you're upstate.GoodluckAny other questions you can try WWW.Packing.org WOODS

Oh!!! And pick your reference people very carefully. One of mine had an ancient felony conviction (DWI) and it may have been what doubled the time for my recieving it. Most people were getting theirs in 4 months. This guy didn't tell me about it till I had already turned the application in.

If you're in Jefferson County I have some advice for you. MAKE SURE that you list "personal protection" as a reason for requesting the permit. The Judge won't approve it if that isn't in the justification block. Also, it helps if you are an NRA member and also a member of one of the local sportsmen's clubs. As you can see, this is drastically different from other counties in NY. It helps if you can get advice from someone in the county in which you live.
