Okay, if I SELL a gun online what do I do to get it to the buyer. It's a handgun if that matters.

The buyer will supply you with a copy of the FFL where he wants the gun shipped. Do not ship without the FFL.Once you have the FFL in hand, make sure the license number is legible. Go to this site: http://204.254.113.252/ and check the number to make sure the license is legitimate.Ship to the address on the FFL, to the dealer, but to the attention of the buyer.Keep the FFL copy with your records, hopefully with your copy of the bill of sale.

So I can send it myself once I have a verified FFL to ship to. Cool. Can I use UPS or is there some other shiping agent I am required to use?

You should use UPS or FedEx. Be advised it will cost about $25 since they require one-day air delivery of handguns to keep their employees from stealing them.FFL to FFL can be sent by USPS at a reduced cost.

There is at least one exception. In Kalifornia, dealers are not permitted to receive guns shipped from non-dealers, so if you are shipping there, you will have to get a dealer to do it for you. Also, some ATF agents are telling dealers that they cannot receive shipments from non-dealers, and the dealers are believing them, even though it is contrary to the ATF's own literature.

I might just have to sell it locally so we can go to the gunshop and do the transfer (required in KA) so I don't end up in jail.

There is nothing in California law prohibiting a dealer from receiving a firearm from a nonlicensee.

Also, be prepared to deal with ignorant fools when you go to UPS or FedEX to ship the gun. UPS and FedEX have been known to occasionally hire liberal hippie ***s that don't know what they are and are not allowed to ship.
