Yesterday morning (Memorial day) I saw a doe munching on clover on the far side of our lake. About 9:00 am. Out from a high clump of grass, came a wobbley, leggy fawn. Went right up under momma and started nursing. That doe is a good momma. Licked and licked on her fawn to clean it up to elimnate odors so the preditors can't located it. The little fawn stumbled and nursed for about 10 minutes. The doe laid down, and guided by some instinct the fawn moved about 25 feet away and laid down in a large clump of tall grass. Stayed there all day, with the doe coming over about noon to nurse it again. We have several pregnant does in the general area of the house. Looking forward to this continuing tale of Mother Nature in action. I feel fortunate to be able to witness yesterday's arrival.

Like in the NFL, defense is the key.

I was out turkey hunting this past weekend, and came upon a ledge, which was a coyote hangout. Found several stool samples, and I inspected them and found a lot of white fur. I looked over the ledge, and saw why the coyotes like that spot. Could see anything coming from 100 yards in all directions. Decided to walk around the area, and ten yards in front of me I kicked up a fawn. Due to the coloring, I thought it was a chipmunk at first, then realized it was a fawn, that loooked to me like it was no older than 24 hours. I told the fawn that here bedding area was a lousy choice, but she did not stick around to listen.

The other day, a wild tom turkey about the size of an ostrich ran across the road right in front of my car. On the way back later that day, I almost ran into a goat that had gotten out of its pasture. A couple of days before that, three young deer ran right in front of my car as I approached a railroad crossing. This is all pretty much in the middle of suburbia, mind you. So either you hunters need to get busy or I'm going to have to learn how to barbecue road kill.

Watched a doe and her twins last Friday. Wish I had brought my camera along.
