Anybody have one? Which are the good ones, and which ones are c-r-a-p? I was thinking about one from White's. Thanks for any input.

Does anyone have any opinions on these? I am looking to buy one and have no clue where to start or what to look for. Any help would be appreciated.

Anyone know anything about them? I was with my brother this weekend-he has one, and has a real hoot with his. He has found several old coins(pieces of eight, morgan dollars, half dimes, etc), old military buttons, musket balls, rings, watches, jewelry. He says his collection of finds is part of his "retirement portfolio".
He gets very involved, goes to the library to look at old maps, gets into history finding where battles were fought, etc. Seems like a lot of fun.
He uses a Whites Classic IDX-I asked him what I should get, of course he said the Whites, told me whatever I get, I want something that "discriminates".
Can anyone suggest some good metal detectors??

Thanks for the replies, guys. Is there anything specific that I should look for or stay away from? I'm a really new guy to this.

The more the whistles and bells, the higher the price tag. You need to find someone in your area to give you some hands on. I wouldn't suggest you buy top of the line first time out but buying cheap means you dig lots ( more ) junk. I would recommend the White's 5900 or 6000 for a starter. Uses both audio and analog display for target ID. Wish I still had my 6000. Worked like a magic wand for silver coins. I promise you will dig pounds of junk for every penny you find when you first start out. The longer you work with it the better you get at figureing out what it's telling you. When I popped my first silver half dollar out of the ground I felt like I just won the lottery. You can E-Mail me direct at cblyon@earthlink.com. Glad too help if I can.
