Dumb deer

I was out shooting last week, and I had a friend come over to learn how to shoot. I live in an unincorporated area, so I can just step out the back door to shoot. We put 100 rds through a .22, and I opened up with one of my .40s. No sooner had I gotten the first 3 rds out, than two fawns walked out of the woods no more than 100 yards away. I tell you what, that was a temptation, but I did well and just watched. Hunting season will be here soon enough, and then maybe we can settle this...[:)]

My brother-in-law and I was out setting up my deer ladder stand one year and had a similiar thing happen. Here it was, hotter than hades and we were sweating like crazy (August in Kansas) and hauling the ladder stand on a cart we'd made and this smaller 8 point buck came around us, down-wind from us and watched us for several minutes. I could have taken him with a pistol if I wanted to and it was in season. I've seen deer do strange things like that before, but never when thier noses are down-wind of me, especially when it is so hot out. Ironically, I had a shot of what I think was the same deer, just 2 months later during muzzleloader season. I had pulled up on him and watched him down my sights as he got closer and eventually passed within 10 yards. He was with a 6 point this time. I always joked that is as close to "hunt and release" as you can get.
Some deer seem to have uncanny abilities to detect you, others are either stupid, curious to a fault, or simply have defective noses! [:D]

No. Only if it's a slow season, or you want really tender venison...

Started hunting over 40 years ago with my Dad and Grandfather, mostly duck, geese and pheasants, deer on a few occasions and pig. My Grandfather use to say; "all the dumb ones, are killed on opening week-end". Which I believe it correct for the most pat. I've spend a lot of time scouting before the seasons open up, and look at the water and feed in the area. After opening week-end, things can be real slim. They wise up fast!
