In your experience with your own rifles or ones you've shot, what has been the most CONSISTANTLY accurate make and model centerfire rifle?

This post is going to get a lot of post and discussions, but I have to say that the Savage rifles are the most accurate out of the box rifles I have owned. Granted I have not owned any of the more expensive rifles (unless you consider Browning expensive) but among what I have owned shooting factory ammo Savage is it.

Agree with juju, the Savage rifle is usually the most accurate out of the box.

I'd call it a toss up between the 700 rem and the savage.

unless you count the UPS box that the HS Precision or Mcmillan rifle came out of,..then I would have to go with them[:D]

The new Weatherbys are pretty accurate, and they send a target as proof with the purchase!

Sakos rank up there, but not in the same price range as Savage. For the $$ they (Savage) are the top pick. Kinda ugly though. Rem 700 would be my choice.

Years ago, dollar for dollar, the Remington 788 line surprized many
    folks....
For production weapons, Sakos would probably come out on top.

The Model 700T VS SF builds on the same design features as our standard Model 700T Varmint Synthetic but with a stainless-steel action and free-floating 26" fluted barrel. The six longitudinal flutes substantially increase the heat-dissipating surface area of the barrel, to retain multiple-shot accuracy and extend barrel life. The composite synthetic stock of aramid fiber, fiberglass, and graphite is reinforced with a precision-machined one-piece aluminum frame that provides positive receiver bedding and shot-to-shot accuracy. Other standard features include swivel studs and magazine floorplate.

Most rifles shoot better than I am capable of shooting them, but the Steyr SSG makes me appear almost competent.

Tanner of Switzerland makes what I consider to be the most accurate production rifles in the world and these have won many matches-- but are too pricey for me. My own Steyr CISM match rifle came with a test target showing 5 shots in a circle about the size of a nickel at 300 meters (I wish I could shoot this well). The Steyr SSG series that DWS mentions are also quite accurate out of the box and my PIII model is capable of extreme accuracy out to 600 meters. SAKO rifles are also highly regarded for their accuracy but I feel Steyr holds a slight edge.

Most accurate I've shot - out of the box...

cal. .308Win Steyr Mannlicher - model Scout by Jeff Cooper.
(Am sorry I ever sold it - but have planned for a .223Rem or .243Win in Scout.. sometime in the future.)

Don't do anything that I've allready done - That'd be just plain STOOOOOOPID.

The most accurate I have "out-of-the-box" rifle is the Remington 700 vs in 22-250. It started right out at 3/8", and I have it at 1/4" and an ocasional hole-in-hole using reloads!

Believe it or not, I have had the best out of the box, consistant accuracy out the cheap little Savages! Howa runs a close second.

    1 Howa
    2 Savage
3 Put the Remingtion back inthe box. Send it to a good smith, And have him blue print it. Then put it back in the number 3 position. It will just be easer to clean.

quote:Brownings are all show and no go

OSS, hate to disagree with you but with my Browning Stainless Stalker in .300 winmag I can knock a knat off a plate of grits at 300yds and not disturb the butter.[8D]

Seriously, my A-bolt is an extremly accurate rifle, and with handloads is even better. I would put it up against most comparativly priced rifles and expect it to either win or tie any of them. Depending on the shooter of course. I cant shoot a handgun worth a darn but I do shoot rifles very well and I wouldnt trade my A-bolt for anything.

JuJu (just my .02 others may vary)

I agree with juju, I've sighted in alot of rifles for friends over the years of several makes and models and I find the Browning A Bolt to be the most accurate. I will always be a Ruger Man, but I've actually only had one and shot perhaps 3 that were "super accurate". On the other hand it was from my experience sighting in for friends that "forced" me to buy one and it is super accurate as well. I have sighted in two 25-06s a .270, a .270WSM a 7mm Mag a 300win mag and my own 7mm 08 and all gave 3 shot groups under an inch. Three gave 1/2" give or take a tad, including mine.

I'm going to have to disagree with all of ya!

For straight out of the box, shooting factory ammo:

    Nearly ALL

    AR-15 Style Rifles

    from all major manufacturers
    (not Hess or Century)

    Will shoot Sub-MOA

    =============================

    So my "vote" goes to

    Durn near

    ANY AR-15 Style Rifle

You didn't say it had to be bolt gun ...

Savage, ugly as it is, Savage, hands down. Now what you need to keep in mind is that my out of the box rifle is classified also in a price range. To me out of the box means it cost less than 500.00 new. Anything more than that and shoot, it better be God awful accurate out of the box, and I bet it still wont touch a Savage, till you get into the nearly custom production guns.

Gotta agree with the resident marine,Sgt Roberts, FOR THE MONEY...Savage is the most accurate out of the box rifle. I will agree that HOWA is a close second.

Take what you spend on your remingtons...buy a savage and practice with the extra ammo that you got with your savings. For the record, and all you name droppers, an elk wont know if it is shot with a savage or a custom snaphaunce remington modified short super-duper magnum.

its the man behind the rifle that makes the rifle.
