Alanna Krause Charlton Heston has spoken out against Bernadine Dohrn's position at NU. Heston 'appalled' by Dohrn Actor and NU alum may cease donations to school Posted 11-27-2001, 04:00 by David Weigel Charlton Heston, former Northwestern student and world-famous actor, said on Monday that he is "shocked" by the presence of 70s terrorist Bernadine Dohrn at NU's law school, and is currently considering whether he will continue to donate money to his alma mater."I'm amazed and, I have to say, shocked that a university with the reputation of Northwestern would hire an unrepentant terrorist like her," Heston told the Chronicle. "I'm appalled."Heston, the president of the National Rifle Association and a former president of the Screen Actor's Guild, found out about Dohrn's position while shooting the upcoming film "Pap? Rua Alguem 5555" in Brazil. He was taken aback when told that Dohrn was director of the Children and Family Justice Center."Good God," Heston said. "That's the last thing you'd want someone like that to do."The actor also took umbrage at comments made by NU's executive director of annual giving, Tim Case, in the Daily Northwestern."It's common for alumni to take issue with a university policy or somebody the university employs," Case told the Daily Northwestern on October 31. "When Charlton Heston comes to campus, we get complaints because he's in the National Rifle Association.""The National Rifle Association was created after the Civil War by General Sherman," Heston said. "It goes back to the Bill of Rights. All of the founding fathers were on record as supporting the right to bear arms. No one can deny that."Dohrn and her husband, Bill Ayers, were members of the Weathermen, an outgrowth of Students for a Democratic Society. The Weathermen set off 18 bombs in federal buildings and public places in the early 1970s, though the only people killed by them were three of the group's own members who died in a 1970 explosion in Greenwich Village.Heston rejected Ayers's claim, made on November 15 at Evanston's Barnes and Noble, that the Weathermen "were flirting with terrorism.""That's like being a little bit pregnant," Heston commented dryly.Carol Lanning, Heston's assistant, confirmed that Heston may not continue to donate money to NU while Dohrn is on staff."He's contributed in the past, but he's definitely going to reconsider any future donations given this situation," Lanning said.- Joshua Elder contributed to this report http://www.northwesternchronicle.org/tools/viewart.php?artid=240
