Have you ever been in a remote spot?I thought I had been in remote spots before but this past week takes the cake. I visited a fishing lodge in the village of Old Harbor, Alaska. It is located on Kodiak Island about 100 miles south of Kodiak, Alaska. No roads connect it to anywhere so it is accessable by boat or small aircraft. Sitkalitdak Island protects it from extreme weather coming in from the bay of Alaska and the tail of Alaska protects it from the Bering Sea. A rugged but beatiful place with a population of about 250 freindly people, mostly Alutig natives. This time of year not much daylight, which made it very strange for a Florida native, not to mention the mountain goats, deer, bears, foxes, ducks, eagles and Kodiak's only glacier! The village claims to be the first site of the Russian Orthodox Church in what is now the U.S. The winter weather can make coming or going unpredictable. It was amazing to find a comfortable lodge in such a remote spot. Reported to be a great summer fishing detination.
