Free Gun Collection Database Software

I've been writing a database for myself to keep track of my firearms collection, and thought I'd share it with the community.BETA 1 of "Gun Safe" is available for download in "Core File Only" version. This means that you'll need a copy of FileMaker 5 or better to run it. A trial version of FileMaker 5 is available from FileMaker if you'd like to give it a test drive. The Stand Alone version will be available by early February. It WILL NOT REQUIRE any additional software to run. Please see http://www.somanyroads.org/gunsafe/index.html for the download and additional information. It is pretty simple, but it may be useful to some folks. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Hope you enjoy it.BTW, this is, and will always be, freeware.Thanks....

looks good sounds good.Being that I'm not a geek..guess I'll wait for stand alone...beta apps. scare me as from what I know about them...they are the "test" apps. program seems that it would be great for all the people that have so many guns they cant recall offhand all that they own, er, of course I wouldnt know about that...

Yep, beta usually means buggy software that may crash your machine. These are just database files for a commercial database program, though -- think of it as downloading a Word document or an Excel spreadsheet. The biggest problems I've found are in the Find functionality (where I accidently locked out input into valuable fields.) The Stand Alone version will also run on the FileMaker engine, but won't require the FileMaker product. Be careful what you put on your computer, you never know where the information might be going.

It would be pretty tough to script something into FileMaker Pro that would covertly transfer user data to my secret mountain hideout where I keep track of Jennings owners. This isn't Visual Basic, or even Access. It's completely "open source". The password to open the core files that you download and modify them to your liking, or look at the setup of the core files, is on the website. You can even change this password on your own computer. These are flat database files. You can encrypt and decrypt 'em with PGP if you like for added security.

I'm not familiar with File Maker Pro (though I've heard the name before), I only work with relational database systems like Oracle, Sql, & Access (Yuck). I wasn't implying you had written a mischievous program, only that its quite easy to write a small, hidden application that opens a MAPI session and emails your flat file databases to BigBrother@Atf.org.Munkey the suspicious...

Would it be secure if big brother should want to borrow your HD ? Could the whole thing be kept on a floppy- or just the data?

Extending this idea, inventory of all firearms and equipment: bullets, cases, powder, primers, loaded ammo, loading dies and bits and pieces as well as spare parts, barrels, mags, mounts, scopes, sights, grips, gun cases could be very useful.

Removeable media doesn't solve the problem. If you can read it, it can be copied. By storing your database on floppy you will limit the size of your database considerably.

Understood, Monkey . . . FileMaker is the probably the largest DB used in the Mac environment and it is #2 to Access in the PC market (and many claim that is only because Office ships with Access). Technically, FileMaker is relational, and I do use all of 1 relation in my layouts, but it is meant for workgroup use at best. Because FileMaker is so fast to develop in, we often use it to mock up what we will build in SQL.

DS11,This really looks super. I've been trying to keep track on an Excel spreadsheet and it looks pretty lame. I'll be interested in you stand alone ver. Why don't you consider making this shareware instead of freeware. I work with guys that develop software and know it's a lot of work. You deserve something for your efforts.Jeff

CBX, Glad you like the looks of it!I'm not interested in making shareware, though. I just write these things for my personal use. If I think others might find it useful, I give it away. If other folks find it useful and it saves 'em a few bucks, that's enough for my efforts. Maybe I'll make it postcardware where if you like it, I ask that you send me a postcard from your hometown or favorite vacation site.
