270DS I looked at the same one! It is a good looking gun! and a shooter to boot! but I had to stick with Savage. Any way you go, that lil .17 will become a keeper for a life time. HINT! Hint!

The Marlin VS's I've messed with as well as the 17V's have all been shooters! So have all the Savage Model 93/17's I've owned and shot! I have yet to find a bad 17! If you can, try to look at the Savage 93/17 SS/laminated. The stock is somewhat bigger than the synthetic model and therefore the clip fits more flush with the stock and doesn't stick in your shoulder when carrying with a sling! I modified a Marlin clip and made it 4 shot instead of 7 to help but it still has to stick out a little. That's about the only thing I would change on the Marlin although the triggers on both the Marlin and Savage could use some work! FrancF can enlighten you about the drop in triggers from Rifle Basix. Good luck! GHD

You guys have me looking at the .17's.
Been thinkin' on a .22 mag,but the more
ya'll brag on .17,the harder it is to make
    up my mind.Yea,I know,"Buy'em Both".I would
but the $$$$$$ are runnin' a little short right
    now.Looked at a Savage 93,stainless w/synthetic
this weekend, sure was light. It seems to be about
the least expensive I've seen, except for the
NEF single shot I saw at the last show.Much heavier,
but maybe that's a good thing since I won't be walking
with it that much anyway.Given that choice, which would
    you choose?The Savage,or the NEF?

IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.

SAVE A FEW MORE $ AND GET THE MARLIN. MINE DOES LESS THAN AN INCH AT 100 YRDS. MUCH FLATTER SHOOTING THAN THE .22 MAG.

DO you think I should get the savage over the marlin? I can get a synthetic savage for about $100 less the the marlin. They have it for about $180.

I love my savage, buy the savage, and save the $100 towards a good deer rifle!

    270Deerslayer:

My savage has a horrible trigger 6# 1/2 oz pull.

    It shakes rattles and rolls.

    Needs an $80 trigger

Check the trigger on the Marlin and you may be about the same price.

This advice cost nothing and is worth every penny.

WalMart sells the Savage .17 bolt action, for 152.00, stainless 172.00

My son just got rid of a marlin .17 because of the 9 pound trigger. It had to be bad because he likes Marlin.

I really want a 17 but I am holding out until the ammo price drops to a more generic amount. I'm spoiled by my 22s.

For a rifle that will most likely be shot a lot in the prone position or on a bench , a top break action like the NEF will soon become a pain as reloading it will disturb your setup.

Good point v35! Never crossed my mind. Anybody had good luck w/ the Ruger model 96/17? Its a lever action, that might mess up some bench/prone shooting as well.
