Trap gun for the young lefty

My 12 year old son just started shooting trap with a 870 express in 12 gauge. I reload our own 1 once loads. After only six rounds of 25, his average is right around 15-16. I would like to get him set up with a trap grade gun for next summer. What would be a good gun for the young lefty? I have heard the 870 trap grade will pound them hard enough to create a good flinch. For now, not many doubles will be shot at, so a catcher on an auto would work. My Browning Citori Trap is a bit heavy for him right now. Any ideas? Thank you, Mark

I started out with an Ithaca Ultra-Featherlight 20ga when I was about the same age, and I'm a lefty. It has bottom ejection which is good for rightys or leftys, and I still use it to this day. I out shot most of the old men at the gun range in trap competitions, since they didn't have a junior division for trap at the range I went to at the time, and they all shot 12ga. It really pissed them off.

My 14 year old shoots a Browning BT 99 but he is over 6 feet tall! I am a 4-H trap shooting coach and I would recomend a good single shot trap gun. A whole lot depends on what kind of budget you are working with but if an 870 is what you want then try some of the low recoil 12 gauge loads put out by Winchester or Remington. We have a 9 year old on our team shooting a Berreta Urika 12 ga and using the light trap loads. He is busting 20 out of 25 on average. My 14 year old is averaging 24+ out of 25 and took 4th place in the region a couple of months ago. He shoots Federal's muliti purpose loads! Also there is a gel pad that costs around $75 that you can add to the stock that takes a lot of the recoil out. If you have a 4-H shooting sports program in your area get with them because they can get you good deals on many trap shooting items. Winchester will sell shells to 4-H shooters with a deal where you buy 3 flats and the fourth is free. That deal also works for the Winchester reduced recoil shells. The low recoil shell will operate an auto as well. I shot them at 4-H certification training in my 1400 Winchester and I could put in 3 with the gun cycling all 3 with no problems! Glad to see there are more young trap shooters out there!

Welcom, Mark. At my trap range we let the newbes try out our trap guns so they can see what works and what does not, Before they go out and buy, Trap guns are expensive. Good Luck
