Got a wisdom tooth pulled today. Way back and lower right. He numbed it up good and had a helluva time getting it out. Didn't hurt then, but it's starting to now! Dentists have much better ways than they did when I was a kid. It was awful back then. Now I'm almost 65 and a little dumber I suppose, cause both wisdoms are gone.

The last two come out tomorrow afternoon. I'm glad I'm a vet. The VA hospital in Minneapolis is pulling them for free.

How many still have them? How late can they start to surface? I always thought that if they hadn't in your 20's, they wouldn't surface, but I have one starting to do so.

They have never bothered me before, nor are they yet fortunately.

Seriously; your dentist will give you a prescription for pain that will help you over the bad part. Get if filled immediately so it will be handy when you need it. In a couple of days you will be back at full speed. And remember: you are not the first person to have this done. All the others survived--you will too.

I had all 4 of mine cut out, not pulled! They put me under and I woke up with one heck of a buzz! Only needle that I even saw was the the one in arm just before I went under.

mustang, Wisdom teeth are a lot like women. Some are easy and some aren't. The roots sometime wind under the bone. That's when they have to be cut out. You got some good advise. Plan on taking the day off. Get your med right away. Probably a good idea to have a designated driver. In a few days you will be laughing about all of this. Unless you develop a dry socket. We will talk about that later. Good luck.Jeff

I'm 47 years young now, but I remember when I had all 4 "impacted" wisdom teeth cut out in 1969 when I was 15 years old. I was put to sleep, and when I awoke there was no pain. I was given codeen to take- but never had too. It was uncomfortable, but faked pain just to get 3 days out of school. I've had teeth pulled, cut out, braces, operations ect. I'm not afraid of the dentist anymore because I know it's not bad at all. Be glad you don't need a "real" operation and that this is your only problem. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, I don't recommend doing this... but here was my experience...I got all four pulled also. The doc gave me local anesthetic only, so i was awake. The needle hurts about as much as when you jab your gum with your toothbrush by mistake. Not bad at all. It didn't hurt as he was doing it, but it was kinda strange watching the doc put his foot up on my chair so he can get leverage and yank that sucker out. Anyhow, he gave me some painkillers to take home and I was set to go. When I got home and the anesthetic started to wear off, i did start feeling a dull pain. Being in college at the time, I killed the pain the only way I knew how... With 2 shots of Bacardi Rum. I don't reccomend doing that in any way, but after that I had enough energy to mow the lawn, clean my room, and rewire my car. Seriously though, It's no that bad. The worst part about it is the days following, when you can't open your mouth very wide because it's sore. Imagine not being able to yawn for 2 weeks. It's like that.Good luck!

Take heart you'll be allright , from the sound of it you've been preceded by many a countryman. Were all hear, sitten an talkin to you.I had 2 removed, several years back; and the best advice I can give you, is be very careful when rinsing your mouth after eating something after they remove the teeth.A little blood plug forms in the socket where the tooth used to be at each location; and if you accidently, swish that guy out when rising, you'll know what real PAIN is, real quick.Grown men do cry.Other than that, your home free, where I live, regular dentists don't usually pull teeth anymore. There is a whole new specialty in the dentistry services, where they specialize in nothing but pulling teeth and doing root cannels. And thgey are smooth.Good Luck![This message has been edited by turbo (edited 01-23-2002).]

I had four permanent teeth pulled and I was awake. All I could hear was the noise- no pain! I like the liquid diet idea though- RUM? Hey!- this is a good time to tell the little women you have a reason to anestise yourself! All jokes aside-- you will be amazed how much this is going to be easy! And that's something you can sink your teeth into--- sorry---- !

Careful with the alcohol. Mess with that stuff and you won't be able to take your pain medicine. Alcohol and medications don't mix.Believe me, medication works a lot better than rum.

Do not deter from the Dentists orders on what to eat, if your gums get infected its worse than the pulling. I was awake for mine in Boot Camp, one was split in 3 pieces before it would come out, took an hour for that one, idiot dentist, some old guy finally came in and rescued me, I think he was a horse shoer or something, hands so big my sides of my mouth almost got an inch longer, cracked the corners of my mouth, but he got it out in 3 minutes flat, thank God. Dont get those gums bleeding doing a lot of exercise either, keep the gauze in there like the dentist tell you. 2 days later you'll be out getting hazed by your wife, no problem.

As has been said, do everything your oral surgeon tells you to do to avoid a dry socket, pain can't describe it. If that doesn't happen, no problem. I threw my pain medication away after taking only one, on the one without the dry socket, on the other, I couldn't live without it. Don't mix booze and pain pills, ever!

I had all four cut out while in the Marine Corps. Damn Navy dentist hated Marines I think. Anyway, they perscribed percocet and I still suffered. I didn't get relief until one of my buds snuck some Jack Daniels into the barracks. After drinking enough, and keeping the pain pills coming, I got through it. Fortunately, it only lasts a couple of days. Good luck!

DO NOT SMOKE!!!DO NOT SUCK ON A STRAW!!!Don't do anything to create the tiniest vacuum effect in your mouth. To do so will guarantee a dry socket and much pain.Back in 1971 when I had mine out, the oral surgeon used some heavy-duty drugs, in the office and prescribed for home use. Serious drugs. Big red capsules. I spent four days after surgery dazed and/or asleep. Never hurt one bit.I existed for those four days on Jello, pudding, and milk shakes. Nothing hot.Nowadays they mainly rely on codeine, which works well enough, but I can't sleep well if I take codeine. I get groggy and want to sleep, but my rest is fitful.Best to do them all at once and have it over with.

I too had all 4 of my impacted wisdom teeth yanked but in my case the lower bottom two were growing back towards my jaw hinge and they couldn't reach them.So of course, under local(Novacaine) I had to watch listen and feel as my oral surgeon put a spreader in my mouth(it was like a car jack that sits in the top and bottom of your mouth) and he commenced in dislocating my jaw by turning the jack until my jaw hinge went POP.The worst part was not the gums afterward but my jaw hurt like hell for about a week.Good luck,I'm sure you wont have to get what I had done,it is a pretty rare thing, but I hope you recover quickly and as pain free as possible,Josey

Just had mine done in November. It was a heck of a lot easier then I thought it would be. I was under for 10 minutes, woke up a little groggy with no pain at all. Avoid eating anything solid for a few days after so as not to rip out your stitches. After you do eat rinse your mouth with warm salt water to remove any possible food left over. Other than that you will be fine. I took the day of the oral surgery and the next day off prior to having it done but as it turned out I could have easily gone to work the next day.

I had mine pulled a week before my 40th birthday. The oral surgeon strapped my arms down before he started as I told him I could not be held responsible if he hurt me. When I woke up it hurt but I survived on Asprin only. I took a day off work and then had the weekend to heal. For the next four days I lived on shakes and Jello. I was out deer hunting the following weekend.Best thing I ever let my dentist do as I have not had a single problem since.Good luck

Just grab the dentist/oral surgeon by the balls and tell him "I will make you a promise, if you don't hurt me I won't hurt you"! Works every time and the nurses think its funny!

robsguns, You bring back some memories. Stationed at Ft. Monroe, Va, I walked in to have one removed. This is back in the 60"s. The dentist, a 1st Louie, probably hated to be there. There was that little medical deferment thing you know. This guy worked on me forever (or at least it seemed). This is no B.S. I had blood all over the bib and my "fatiques". He actually said "fu*k this" tossed the instruments on the floor and left. I never saw him again. After what seemed lke an hour (probably 5 min) this 60 year old dentist came in, looked at my sorry self, and had the SOB out in 10 minutes. The other 3 later in life went much better.Moral: Never visit a dentist with an attitude.Jeff

I broke all the rules when I had my wisdom tooth pulled. I didn't take the pain medication and had zero pain when the stuff the dentist gave me wore off. I smoked just as much as before and ate whatever I wanted. No pain and no dry socket.

I used to fear the shots worse than the drilling. I went for a long time without going to the dentist until I finally had to go. I was in such fear that I had to go to a hypnotist first. He taught me how to put myself under as well. The fact is the shots are not nearly as bad now. They don't use novacane anymore & whatever they use needs much less, works better & wears off much faster. One problem I found was the stink when they drill, if you can get them to slow down a little you won't have either the smell or the heat build-up. Geez....I must be the lucky one here. Had all four of mine pulled at one sitting. Had some Xylocaine and some nitrous. The thing that was most unnerving was hearing all those little veins popping as the tooth was broken free. Sounded like firecrackers. No pain. Not much bleeding. The bleeding had stopped by the time I got to my car and I never needed the pain killers.Mudge the tough

Mine came out 35 years back, in pieces. Seems they were growing in "impacted," meaning sideways. My dentist wouldn't touch 'em, said "go find an Oral Surgeon, please."So I did & he used a chisel to split 'em up (two to a session, about a month apart), then took out the pieces.EDIT: sorry, I didn't notice... you've probably already been & gone by the time you read this.Get the pain killers your doc suggests, take 'em BEFORE you need 'em (BEFORE what he gives you has worn off) & good luck to you.Next week'll look better come Monday.[This message has been edited by spclark (edited 01-24-2002).]
