Well I am in the process of cleaning all my rifles. Nice day outside so I set on my back porch cleaning one of my Mauser's. An Yugo 48A, I love shooting this rifle and I noticed the bolt release was real dirty so I took it off and I`ll be damn I dropped the screw that holds it in place and it went down between the board on the floor of the porch. I climbed under the porch and even took a magnet to try and find it with no luck.

Now I have looked on Gunbroker and Midway USA for a replacement with no luck I really thought I would find one on one of these two sights. I am afraid I am going to have to look on "FLEBAY" to see if I can find one. It kills me to do it but I need my rifle in working order at all times.

I have a new rule in my home. All guns are to be cleaned in my gun room only ( NO EXCEPTIONS ).

+1 on Numrich Gun Parts Corp. They seem to specialize in older guns. You should find what you want there.

    Get a bigger magnet?
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I always find that small things I drop tend to end up 3 times as far away as seems reasonable. Try looking further away from where you think it went, even look between boards to see if it is actually stuck in a crack.

I dropped that almost microscopic spring from inside a Ruger .22 Mark II in the sand at the range one day while cleaning. Went home and got a spaghetti collander. It didn't take long. A couple of shovels full of fine sand and there was the spring, laying there in the collander. [:D]

Another suggestion. Always lay out an old terry cloth towel on the table top when disassembling guns. They catch what you drop and the fiber keeps them from bouncing away or rolling into cracks between the table top boards.

If its really pointy, take you shoes off and walk around. That's how I find most things.

Get one of those long magnets on a broom handle, they'll probably cover a 12" wide path each sweep. Carpenters use them to pick up nails.

You'll probably find that the part didn't fall completely thru the floor.

Here's what you do. Sit down in the exact spot where you were sitting. Drop a similar small part in the manner that you dropped the first one. Watch where it goes. It will land within inches of where the first one landed. Keep doing this until you find the original part (or have lost all your small parts.)

Just looked up who is running it now his daughter Nancy. She just happened to be a senior when I was a freshman at the same school. Loved going into their shop when it was in Lancaster.

Next time, throw an old bed sheet under your work area. The part will fly a couple feet past the sheet, but at least you tried!

    Borrow a metal detector.

They may have it.....but it will take them 2 months to send you your package....it will be the wrong part......then you will spend 3 days trying to get the old one sent back, and new one ordered.

Then wait another month for a new part and be lucky if they don't send you the same wrong part!!

That's pretty much the way my last transaction went with them. The attitudes sucked, like it was my fault they sent the wrong part.

    I ordered a safety for a '98 Mauser. They send a safety for a Mossberg 500. Yeah, that totally wasn't their fault.[B)][}:)]

It was in the last place you looked. [:D]
I found that one of the metal bowls with a magnet under it works good for me.
    Congrats on finding it.

I have a very regular system of cleaning guns myself, and have never lost a part before. Except for the new Yugo M57 I got recently, which is very hard to come by. It was perhaps greasier than any other gun I've touched before, so I took it to the kitchen counter and took it apart there since it was closer to the sink and smaller than the greasy rifles I usually clean. Well what do you know. I am like 2 feet away from the sink, and I needed a little extra push to remove just 1 pin, so I hit the punch with a hammer, in the direction opposite the sink. But somehow it flew right into the sink, and not only that, it went straight down the garbage disposal. I got my hand in there to get it because I saw it clearly, and as I lifted it up, it dropped down and I never saw it again.

So, after almost crying, and looking everywhere online, I managed to find 1 seller on GB and 1 on ebay who had a small parts collection with the 1 part I needed. GB was the choice of course. Had to pay more, but I got it, and it was sure better than buying another new gun, which would still leave me with 1 gun that doesn't work. Bet I won't do that again.
