If you read into the rhetoric, this has always been our policy. There is only one China and it includes Taiwan and should be governed by a democratically elected body. We are not recognizing the communist Chinese government as the legitimate government of Taiwan because it has not been democratically elected.

I think there is some kind of theory, based on the fact that Chang Kai Shek fled to Taiwan from mainland China, that the government of Taiwan is actually the legitimate government of China in exile from the mainland. These are the same leaders I saw throwing food at each other on the news last night.

What I find interesting is that as my son has dual American/Chinese citizenship (from birth), both Chinas can draft him into their army. And, as there is no way to give up Chinese citizenship, he's stuck (when the Chinese wrote the law, they did not consider a foreigner being given citizenship--after all, the only people being born in China were Chinese!).

He, for some reason, doesn't think it as funny as I do.

Don't assume malice for what stupidity can explain.
