Huntsville, Texas-AP -- The state of Texas has carried out its final scheduled execution of the year.Vincent Cooks was put to death tonight in Huntsville for the 1988 killing of off-duty Dallas policeman Gary McCarthy during a grocery store robbery.Cooks made no eye contact with relatives of the slain police officer.He has maintained that he was not the killer.Cooks was the 17th Texas inmate to receive a lethal injection this year.That makes the 2001 execution total in the state the lowest since three people were put to death in 1996.During 2000, a record 40 inmates were put to death.Four executions are already set for 2002.

    One thing about executions--they're certainly FINAL. No "technical/overcrowded releases" and commission of another crime. Our society should relearn the meaning of "justice."
