I need less than lethal for a shotgun

edited May 2017 in General Discussion
I would love to have some less than lethal loads for a 410 shotgun to keep the deer out of my garden. I figure a well placed slap in the * with a LTL round will keep them a way.

Where can I get them?

    Rock salt.

But the best deer deterrent is go to your local barbershop and gather up all the hair clippings. Scattered around your property, dear won't come near it. They smell that human scent that will make them go to other places that doesn't have a human scent

Lightfield ammunition makes rubber buckshot for 410. I didn't see any on the auction side but just checked with one of my distributors and it is available, have your local gun store order some for you, should be about $10 for 5 rounds.

Not a firearm, but a deer repellent that WORKS-

Problem w/ human hair, green soap, pie pans on fishing line, etc- the deer get used to it.

Go to Lowes/Home Depot/ etc, get a cheap motion detector flood light. Add a regular plug so that it can plug into an extension cord. Mount at the edge of garden about 4 feet from ground.

Only put 1 light bulb in it. For the other socket, use a screw in adapter that lets you plug a regular 120 volt plug into a light socket. Plug a weather proof radio in that. Leave it on the TEST setting (resets after 5 seconds)

Bambi comes walking up to sample the buffet at 0200. Motion detector trips light, radio blares, Bambi hauls *. Light resets, radio stops. And they can't get used to it because it does not stay on.

Have used one for about 8 years. Got a radio from the thrift store for $2, wrapped in a trash bag for weatherproofing. Light was $15.

Why not just load them yourself? Get some bungee cord, or rubber washers, and load them into a Winchester AA.

I've got a Mossberg 500 Defender I picked up for ultra-cheap as a beater gun, and I load up shotgun shells with the craziest stuff I can think of. It's a blast! (literally). Dang gun is bulletproof! Looks better than new now.

Ice is fun, but you've got to keep it frozen until you shoot.

Heck, just stuff toilet paper into the wad. The toilet paper will disintegrate, but the wad itself will give a good hard slap on the backside!

We used to do that years ago. We would load shells with different things and shoot them at scraps of sheetrock for 'testing'.

Spent primers are the most fun. They spread like the Begeezuz, and make great wizzing noises. From the looks of the sheetrock, burglars would not like shells loaded with a mix of pistol, rifle, and shotgun primers. [:0][:D]

    Remove the original load
Pour rock salt in almost to the top
Seal with a hot glue gun keeping the glue inside the diameter of the case.

Voil?! Almost like grandpa used to make.

that makes PERFECT sense because it triggers 2 of the deer's alarm systems. vision and hearing! excellent!quote:Originally posted by 11b6r

Load up some airsoft pellets in your 410.

You guys are awesome. a bungee cord and airsoft pellets at 12-30 yards should do the trick. The loaded LTL rounds are very pricy, up to 5 bucks a shot. I'll just bust them with a 30 -06 and be done with it for that price.

11b6r, what model of radio is it. I have never seen a radio with a test button on it. I have a spare motion light and might be able to figure this all out before my beans are mowed down.

bruce I think he meant the test mode on the motion detector, you'll need a double bulb one, one for the light, the other for the radio, with a screw in adapter for outlet.

410 is "less lethal" from the start(ha, ha).
Better set up an electric fence.

The motion detector lights have a "test" setting- not the radio. Test setting overrides the day time/ night time thingy, and only stays on a few seconds instead of a few minutes.

I have to have a security clearance for work. If I was out popping Bambi with a .410 loaded with dried blackeyed peas, Murphy's Law says a game warden would show up and write me a summons for poaching. I REALLY do not need that! [:p]

Oh really. Deer avoid human scent. The four that stand outside my backdoor every night eating the hostas beg to differ. I literally have to get within 10 feet of them waving a stick before they slowly walk off.
