Heat Pump Problem

My AC is running all the time. It will not cut off. The temperature here was 94 and we have it set at 75.

The air coming out of the vent was 65.4 degrees. I put freon in the unit and the temperature dropped to 61.1.

However the AC will not stop running. Any ideas?

Noticed yesterday when I got home that the outside unit was running but the inside fan was not. House was not cold, outside temp. around 55f. I turned the breakers off for the heat pump and left them off until bed time. When I turned them back on, outside unit ran and inside fan ran until temperature was reached. Outside unit ran and ran and ran. I finally got up and turned the gas logs on and turned the breaker for the heat pump off.
Is the outside unit stuck in defrost? It seems to be working but it won't cut off when it should.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Stupid question but, Do you have the fan on auto or on???? Check your filter and make sure it is clean. If you added Freon, did you push some through the hose before opening the can??? No air.

Dave, you should have a 16 to 20 degree split between the return and supply air temp.

    Some ideas...

Have you washed down the outdoor unit lately?
It really helps with the heat transfer.

Make sure the air filter is clean too.

It must be properly charged with refrigerant to work most efficiently.

And, consider the attic insulation levels and drop the curtains on sun-facing windows.

    Dirty filter first guess.

Second guess is when it's 94 outside and 77 inside and you have it set to 75, it's going to run until it gets to 75. I'd change the them to 78 and see if it turns off.

Third guess, how old is the system. When my old system was near the end of its life it labored like that and then the compressor blew.

If it isn't icing up, either the insulation in the home isn't great enough or the unit is too small.

The filter was changed last night. Its changed monthly but it was not dirty. Changed it 1 week early.

The house is 15 years old so that is how old the heat pump is.

"HEAT PUMP" as John will tell you and I learned in school. Is neither a dedicated heater, nor A/C...It's a "tweener"..
What U need is a HEATER for winter and an A/C for the summer .Heat pumps just SUCK!!

"Heat pumps just SUCK!!"............well I could agree with you......but then we'd both be WRONG. Good quality 'heat pumps' work equaly well heating or cooling and do it very effiecently. the 'heating' part only works down to outside temps of about 0 f. depending on make.
