I bought another British Enfield Sunday, a nice No.4, only $89. It got me thinking, how many of us on this forum enjoy surplus rifles, and what are your favorites. With the price of new rifles approaching the price of a good used car these great old military rifles seem better and better to me. Any favorites out there?

I also own a Enfield No.4 and I think it is one of the best guns for the money out there. They are fun to shoot, accurate and don't beat you to death like the other bigger rifles.

I bought an Enfield No.4 last year for $90 and fitted it with a Boyds sport stock and Weaver scope. It is a tac driver with a good group out to 300 yards - very satisfied and use it for hunting and target. Have several other Enfields just for collecting, they are a nice well made weapon. You do get some looks in the field from the other guys with the $500 rifles.
Pack slow, fall stable, pull high, hit dead center.

I've been playing with a Krag that my great grandfather sporterized back in the 20's. It's lots of fun.I've got an 1891 Argentine engineers carbine on the way I just bought on GB. The 1st auction I've ever managed to win here.I've owned at several SMLE's over the years. They are second only to a .22 when it comes to fun shooting.I think the future holds a Martini in .303 in it. That or I know a guy who converts Swiss Veterli's to centerfire. All I've owned were no4's maybe I'll try and pick up an early Enfield or maybe even a Lee Metford WOODS

Mauser 98K is my favorite, but only because the jury is still out on the Mosin-Nagant 91/30. Have never fired a Garand, M1 carbine, or M14. SKS is nice, lighter recoil than the 8mm, and ammo price is just slightly higher than the 8mm. I don't yet consider the AK a surplus as I believe they are still issued in places. No real opinion on the Enfields, although I can easily see myself buying one in the near future.

Mauser 98k ... I wish someone makes them stainless steel in the future ,then M14 and M30 but with a modified gas system like Ruger mini 14 (The only realy good thing i see in the mini after all ) . Just think .. Stainless! you drop it in a salty mangrove find it a month later and it still shoots ! ...

I have two Arisakas, 7.7mm, a SMLE No.1 MK III*, and a 1938 Mosin Nagant. I like the Nagant carbine for it's size, but it doesn't have the smooth action the others have.

Swedish Mauser for accuracy. Portuguese Kropatschek for oddball. 1903 Springfield for history.

I have a couple of F-49s and they are great rifles. The Belgians hid the design from the Germans during the war or our troops would have had a much harder time in Europe. The ones I have came in from Israel and were referred to as "never fired and only once dropped in the sand".

I've been trying to get into this racket for years and have had little luck. Sure, there are Enfields and 98K's out there, but the prices are absurd! If I order it over the net, once I pay shipping and a processing fee, I'm getting close to the price of a new gun. If it's a $150 difference between a gun made 50 years ago and dragged all over Europe and one made 6 months ago, never fired, and with a warranty, then the smart money goes with the second choice every time. If I could find either gun in decent shape for $120 plus tax and $2 call in fee I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. I was especially taken by the 6.5 Swedes. Saw one at a gun auction in pristine shape. Went for $320. Ouch.
