Where to shoot besides ranges?

Can anyone give me any pointers about where to shoot besides ranges? Can you shoot on BLM land? Forest Service land? Etc?

I'm tired of the ranges here.....they are pretty crappy, as a rule. :(

If anyone lives near Tucson, and knows where you can go out into the desert in some remote area (within an hour of Tucson) and blast away, please let me know!

Thanks!

Sometimes I don't feel like packing up all my stuff, and waiting for other people to shoot, talking to everone for 30minutes before I leave, so I just drive out to B.F.E. put my earplugs and safety glasses in, and shoot at dirt piles for about 15 minutes.

If you don't know what B.F.E. stands for I'm not going to tell you, but basically its just a place out in the middle of nowhere and nothing or no one for miles around.

One thing that works well here is to talk to private land owners about shooting on their property. Be polite and if they say, NO, smile and thank them for their time.
If they say yes, be sure to keep them happy, don't shoot their trees (cactus), don't use their fences for target holders, DO leave the place cleaner than you found it (pick up your brass, targets, and any litter you see on the ground), don't tear up their ground with your vehicle, etc., stop on your way out and thank them.

The most common reason landowners say NO are: torn up ground, shot up property, litter and trash left behind, cut fences, etc

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

Come to Arizona, two thirds of the state is reservation land, not difficult to find your own private open range.

    Tailgunner1954 has the right Idea.
I have a shooting bench set up over the hill from my house, and let most people who ask use it.

Head south on Rt 83 toward Sonoita. When you pass the covered rest stop/picnic area turn rt on the dirt road. It goes all the way to Green Valley if you stay on it long enough. There is lots of places to safely shoot and not hit people or cows. CAUTION: rattle snakes live there also.
    Have a good shoot.

Mercury - usually, shooting on public land (BLM, National Forest) is OK; just make sure it is not a National Park or National Monument or something like that. Sometimes, I have found that a specific piece of public land will have restrictions against shooting. On one area of BLM land just east of me, it is legal to hunt, but not to plink. Make sure that you observe the rules of outdoor etiquette like picking up after yourself and leaving gates like you found them. Also, it is important to remember that public land is used by the public, so you have to watch out for other people.

    WOOF.

    Thanks for all the tips.

Smokey: Appreciate the hint. I have shot out by Ina Road, but got the hassle last time I was there. Supposedly, there is a place past the Fairgrounds, too. I just didn't want to drive forever. :)

I live in AZ about 2 blocks from the Coconino National Forest. We drive about 2 miles to an abandoned Flagstone Pit and shoot a lot. Mostly handguns as the logical place to shoot is a Maximum of 75 yards long. We also pick up a lot of usable brass left behind by others. The Forest Service does not bother us.

I live in New Mexico and BLM land for shooting is just fine here. There are some areas that are posted for horse trails and such. For the most part no one goes out where you need a topo map to find out where you are. No I do not have a GPS I still use a map and compass.
