Went to a yard-garage sale today with my wife and granddaughter. There was alot of guy stuff to look at.I walked over to the garage to look at a early Ford wire wheel.leaning against the garage door holding it open was what looked like a large mortor shell. The shell was about 20 inches tall and about as round as a old style quart of oil can.The four fins were made of tin and about 4 to 5 inches long.It weighed around 8 to 10 pounds and was probaly made of cast iron. The guy running the sale did not want to sell it as reminded him of where he use to work.He said he got it in the late 60s or early 70s from a ammunitions plant he had worked at.He said it was a pratice bomb that did not explode on impact, just gave off a lot of smoke. Anybody seen anyting like this?

This one is only about 18 to 20 inches long.I use to buy some practice bombs about 3 feet tall back in the early 1960s from the local Army-Navy store. They cost $2.00 each and they were in brand new condition. They were painted grey and were made of light sheet metal(tin).I was told they were filled with flour or white chalk so they would leave marks on the ground when they hit it.

From your description it sounds like a MK-106 Practice Bomb used by the USAF to simulate dropping a high drag GP bomb. My military specialty was Munitions Maintenance and I built several thousand of these over the period of my career. It took a drop in cartridge in the nose about the size of a 10 Ga. shell and had an impact primer so that when the bomb hit the ground the spotting charge would discharge for the range spotters to score the hit (or miss). They make really neat lamps!![:D] BTW, These were usually orange in color.[^]
