When I start my mower {Briggs} it will idle fine, then when I push it it dies, it is a cheaper "throttle free" design, besides old gas any suggestions?

Bad spark plug, dirty air filter, bad spark plug wire?? I would start by cleaning the air filter with soap and water first, then I would try the other 2 things.

Sounds like maybe some moisture in the carb bowl.

    filter may be clogged
jet could have a a piece of dirt in it
    pick up tube dirty
its its one with a float bowl, the float might not be working correctly. That can be caused be several things, hole in float, needle stuck or dirty, needle missing rubber tip or niddle is all steel with a rubber seal in the hole that is wore out, causing the engine to flood and bog down.

Take off the carb and clean it out. Take a airhose and blow all the little holes and out and take carb cleaner to it. 99 percent of the time if it runs ruff but idles good and it's a dirty carb. It's not very hard to do, it shouldn't take more the a half hour. Also check your gas lines/gas filters while you have the carb off. Then make sure your choke isn't sticking.

you dont have to take the carb off. Just flip it up on its side remove the airfilter and the housing(three 5/16 screws). Loosen the bottom fuel bolt nut and take off the bowl. Take a can of carb cleaner and bend the tube up and shoot carb cleaner up till you hear it shoot thru the main carb jet. If you have a adj screw remove it and squirt carb cleaner thru there also and reinstall screw till it gentely bottoms out and turn back out CCW about 1-1/2 turns from bottom. Flush the bowl and reinstall and put filter and housing back on and go.

I had a mower that was lacking power. All of the head bolts were loose and there was major compression loss.
I retorqued the head and fixed it.
