Received a fake Paypal notice today to remove limitations on my account.
The notice looked authentic, logo and all. It wanted you to sign on to settle a bogus claim number.
DONT DO IT !

Not a problem here, just as I know I can't win a state lottery when I haven't bought a ticket.

Get a lot of those "Phishing" scam emails in my junk mail folder. Delete them unopened.

If I see a subject line that looks "Phishy", I put in the address of the website myself. Type in the "paypal.com" or whatever. If there are truly messages, they will be waiting there.

Never click on links in email.

Yep, I like EBAY, but I want nothing to do with their PAYPAL. Regular credit card works fine.

Got a similar phishing email from "GoDaddy" last week. I simply assume that every email I get is bogus, until proven otherwise.

That goes double for phone calls from "Microsoft" telling me I need to fix my Windows. Yeah, right.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

My bank account number was hacked through Pay Pal. They got $300, but I noticed it right away because I check the bank activity daily. Pay Pal did reimburse my account. I had to set up a new checking account.

I got a legitimate email from PayPal that I thought was phishing. I contacted them on the phone and they said someone had logged into my account from an overseas location.

For many years I utilized simple passwords in most of my internet dealings but that's become a bigger risk and I no longer do that when creating new accounts.

I haven't used PayPal in years and have no definite plans to ever do so but I might want to sell something on Fleabay again some day if there was no other option.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

Why is it a necessary evil?

It does not seem to be necessary to me. Have never tried to or wanted to buy anything that required paypal only.
