You can have my assault rifles... I'm moving on...

I had a great time this weekend. Some friends and I went to the National Forest Shooting Range and blew off several thousand rounds. We shot rapid fire, with double pistols, and all the crazy stuff they won't let you do at the city range. I ended up bump firing the greater portion of 500 rounds through my Ak. After a while amazing as this may sound the simulated full-auto fire started losing its dazzle. Sure, the cases flying, muzzle flashing, and shimmy of the recoil were all great, but it was short lived, inaccurate and fruitless. I started noticing I hadn't seen one of my buddies around in a while. As the silence flooded back in for a few moments, I heard a loud crack and watched from over a hundred yards away as the cap of a milk jug was disintegrated. I looked back toward the source of the sound and could only see the tip of a fluted heavy barrel Ar15 protruding from the rear of the truck bed. I watched in awe as every shot resulted in a pin point accurate strike, whilst the barrel remained completely motionless. "That looks fun" I thought. So, I pulled out the girl friend's trusty Scoped Remington Heavy Barrel 22lr and took careful aim at the small piece of cable dancing in the wind about 30 yards out. Pssfffttt! (Its a 22 ok!) Dang! Missed! Pssfffttt! WOO HOO! Dead on! After that I was hooked. I started to attempt shots at about 100 yards but was disappointed when my groups varied terribly. I knew then that I loved my evil 'Assault Rifles', but my passion was sharp shooting! As soon as I got back I started looking for something to meet the criteria. Accurate to 500 yards, extremely low to nonexistent recoil, extra heavy, and capable of Sub-MOA groups. I think I finally found it. The Remington 700 Police Light Tactical Rifle in 223 with heavy fluted parkarized barrel and black composite stock. I plan on outfitting it with a bi-pod, muzzle brake, and 14x+ low light scope. Since it isn't an evil semi-automatic, pistol griped, hi-cap rifle it must not be dangerous, , so I think I can have the treaded barrel and any other goodies I can imagine. Why didn't somebody tell me about this stuff sooner!Sniper MunkeyPS. My buddy just told me Remington sells FULLY ADJUSTABLE DROP IN TRIGGER KITS!!!! SWEEET!!!! I can top it all of with a 2 or 3 ounce trigger pull!

V35,Sniper Rifle?!I would never have an EVIL SNIPER RIFLE, I'm getting a Light, Tactical Rifle with high power scope I really like the 700 VS SF but the price make a big ouchy on my thin little wallet. What about that 710 (Poor Monkey's Special) is it in the same league or does it play a completely different game.Clouder, I can't say I've completely thrown away the huggies yet, I still get a shivers when I look at those pretty Tommy's.Simon,You don't have an Ak yet?! What the heck is wrong with you!? Every great gun collection has to have at least one AK, however, an SKS will suffice as a temporary substitute. I've seen some Norinco Model-D (Factory Made to Take Ak Mags) SKS's with the milled receivers, screw-in 16 inch threaded barrels, pre-ban with folding stocks for the price of a Romanian Sar. Aim Surplus has a good deal on Sar-1's right now. You know, before 9-11 Sar-1s were 279?!Sniper Munkey[This message has been edited by thesupermonkey (edited 01-15-2002).]

Snipermonkey....As I've said on previous posts, rock'n 'n roll'n is fun but expensive. Yer right, almost nothin' like the satisfaction of seeing the holes in the X ring from 500 yds.Never tried it with anything smaller than my Garands.Mudge the marksman
I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!

Thanks for the info Snip, er, Munkey. I have been kickin' 'round the idea of an SKS.I just wish I could fix it up the way I want: Folding synthetic pistol-grip stock, Bipod, Rubber armored optics, etc.

Well, lightweight and no recoil it's not, but have you considered an M1A? I'm telling you, it is a blast to shoot better at 200 yards with iron sights (with my M1A) then some of the guys at the range with $500 scopes. Something about it, I love that rifle.

I guess the world must be round. I am a 62 year old dyed in the wool old Winchester lover that got introduced to the dreaded assault rifles this year. I bought a russian sks this fall just because they were going up. When my son came up from Alabama for Christmas he brought me an AK for a present. We shot a lot of paper and tin cans that week. They are probably more accurate than I can see. We had a ball and even got some rifles limbered that can make one hole if you can shoot well. I kind of consider it rounding of your education. Munkey, keep them all. Take it from me if you get rid of something there will come a time you will say "Wish I had it back"

SniperMonkey!Something you might concider is picking up a Remington or Savage heavy barrel in 22-250 instead of .223, much better for those 500+ yard prarie dogs ... check the auctions for some good prices. The Rem 788 is also a good varmint gun ...

supermonkey, Congrat's on the Epiphany (SP?) as to the satisfaction one feels when the intended target is pierced with the greatest of precision at some intended distance. It will not fade as quickly as the noise and comotionary act of spraying the immediate area with tumbling objects of indisriminate aiming and non-prejudiced intent. Let me know when you want to move up slightly in recoil, I have a 6.5-06 ackley imp. on a weatherby mark V action with a Hart barrel I am considering letting go. Built with a 1:8 twist for the heavy, low drag bullets for the "long haul" ranges.

A Savage Tactical on a Carlos Hathcock sniper stock with a Timney trigger is a very beautiful thing. Even without replacing the trigger, cloverleafs at 100 yards with Federal Gold Match loads are quite possible. It's also a fairly economical package.

"Judge" What the heck did you use to get a shot @ 900 yds to a dime? How did you sight it? I couldn't hit a dime at 900 if I carried the bullet to it!

I think that the judge forgot to mention that it took 275 rounds to hit the dime (and another 600 rounds to hit a quarter - throw enough lead at anything and sooner or later you WILL hit it!!!)

shoot the dime close up, move it to 900, then you have a shot dime at 900 OR, shoot from 900 while sitting on a dime, then you can keep 5 shots on a dime at 900

How to hit a dime at 900 yds: Go to the bank, get a lot of rolls of dimes. Glue them to a large piece of cardboard -- large enough that you can hit somewhere on it. Use a hexagonal pattern so there's very little space between them. Then blaze away with 10 or 20 rounds. You'll probably get a few quite close to center. You then dismount the dimes, return the unhit ones to the bank, keep the ones hit near center, and throw the others away. For better efficiency, do it in 2 layers, with the second layer covering the holes between the dimes of the first layer. If you want, you can have your friends sign a statement that they saw you hit those dimes with 10 rounds at 900 yds. Imagine the pride you'll feel showing them and swearing on a stack of Bibles you hit them at 900 yds![This message has been edited by Gordian Blade (edited 01-16-2002).]

Smonkey, That 700 LTR is a hoot! I really like mine, it's a DM (Detachable Magazine, that way I can STILL go to a high cap mag! ) model in .308. It does have a smidge of recoil, so the same rifle in .223 should fit your bill quite well. For me, this rifle seems to point naturally like a Browning Hi-Power does. Have some fun and "* some!"

Do yourself a favor and stay away from the 2-3oz triggers. They are dangerous for ANYTHING but a benchrest competition rifle. I don't take my 2oz trigger gun out to do anything but shoot off of the bag. Carry that around with a round in the chamber, (and no safety) as it is a benchrest trigger, and somebody WILL get hurt. Go with a jewell and adjust it to 1-1 1/2 lbs.

A Modified ENFIELD 1?w 36L BB with a 75mm 60x scope military match grade ammo a lot of concentration and dedication,a million of an inch off and you miss ,so INTUITION is the main machine to do the job ,like Pancho VillaOnce said ,I shoot the bullets GOD puts them in the Human harts .(refering to the bad guys) he was an INTUITIVE shooter, made thoose Impossible shots common. So I combined shooting with reiki ,ninja and "Tai-Chi" skills ,it works quite fine,we were always making fun of trying to "circunzize" a fly at 1000Y but erasing dimes was a "daily" training for us,600y is no easy candy to chew but is a darn of a good goal.(Motivation) But as any profesional you need the right tools ,we built our own and ordered customtwists BB for our HARDWARES ,is a learn as you go thing and keep the best that serves you.
