All of our Plywood is going to IRAQ

There was an article in the paper today. Seems the price of plywood and strandboard has nearly doubled, thanks to the Feds buying large amounts to ship to Iraq. Most of the local lumber yards are only selling plywood to there large volume contractors. Seems the little guys are **** out of luck! Glad I don't need any!!!

I have noticed lumber going up for a little while now. It has almost doubled in the last 3 months.

Tell me about it![:(!] I'm a contractor in the DC metro area and OSB has gone from $6-7 a sheet to $17.29 a sheet in the last 30 days!...almost tripled...which could hurt my business. I do understand the significance of our rebuild efforts in Iraq though. This may in fact, hurt my business economically, but what we do in the Mid-East right now far outweighs my personal problems. The reason for this whole mess is that the Federal gov't just procured 2 lots of plywood. One lot is the equivalent of 100 train loads. One car on one train is the equivalent of 5 tractor trailer loads...that should give you some idea of the quantity and significance of this situation, in relation to the building industry.

YEA,, Up here in The Great Northwest we get really PO'd when all those canadian building products get sold to some other part of the world!

But what the Iraqis don't know is that they're only getting like ... 2/3 of a sheet of REAL plywood.

You all have a very short-term view of things! In ten years' time, Iraqi oil will flood our markets with cheap gas and peace in the Middle East, a direct result of Bush's war, will create a vast new market for American goods in the form of a Middle East free trade zone! How dare you complain about the here and now!

And yes, I am being facetious. On a previous post, some folks were complaining that those who are against the war are myopic and unpatriotic. Well, if being concerned about how a record budget deficit will affect me ten years down the line is myopic and if thinking that we should be helping Americans first is unpatriotic, then I guess I need glasses and a civics course.

When my former employer built an addition on thier building 4 yrs ago, the contractor in charge was throwing partial sheets of plywood into the dumpster. He felt it wasn't worth the cost of having a guy sort through them. I found his laborers and had a talk with them. I arrainged to park my truck so it was closer than the dumpster. Every night I came out to a truckload. All of it's 5/8" and the pieces range from 2'x2' to 4'x5'. Theres a pile of it in the loft of my barn about two feet high. I won't be buying plywood for a long time unless I need a full sheet.

I guess I'm just a scrounger. You should see the pile of maple boards I picked from a dumpster when a nearby school district remodeled thier library. Got two loads of them with my little S-10 size truck. Thought for sure I'd break a spring but didn't.

We make OSB panels where I work. Yes, prices have went up but not as much as Lowes and Home Depot are charging.

Prices change every week and is based on supply and demand.

It's highly probable that it will drop back down by then. Lumber prices fluxuate all of the time...it all comes down to supply and demand. Rain and forrest fires have a huge impact on lumber prices too. Good luck with your project.

Not a good year for building. I was going to build myself a garage,
but the way the lumber prices shot up, it would have just
about cost me as much as a contractor gave me a bid for a few
months ago. Might as well let them do it. Time to send some of
that Iraq oil over here... another long, cold, expensive winter
    is right around the corner....
