AR15 accuracy?

I want to start by saying that I am not by any means a competition level rifleman-far from it-if I was I would probable be concidering something more like M21 tactical or a quality bolt action. I am wondering how much noticable accuarcy could be gained from (all else being equal) a 24" matchgrade bull brl AR15 over a Hbar 16" brl AR15 when shooting from 100 out to 500 yards with use of a decent to good scope. I'm just wondering if the difference in consistent accuracy of these will only be realized by a highly skilled shooter or if an average shooter will benefit from the longer match bull brl on the AR.

bhale187I concider myself to be an average shooter, with an above average AR-15. I have a tricked out bushmaster lower with a 2.5 pound trigger and a JP Enterprise upper with a 24" 1 in 8 twist stainless bull barrel topped with a BSA Platinum 6-24X40 target scope ... I shoot 1/2"-3/4" groups at 200 yards consistantly. Of course I roll my own ammo, I shoot molly-coated 69 grain Sierra hollow-point boat-tail match bullets with 24 grains of BLC-2 and standard cci primers. Is that accuracy? At our club we have an NRA High-power Sport Shoot in which we have a 200 yard bench match ... I took 1st place for the last 2 years, out shooting lots of bolt guns

Kimberthanks for the info & congrats on the 1st place in club competition-sounds to me like you are a better than average shooter. I take it though you're saying the advantage of better equipment will be advantageous for an average shooter as well as the expert marksman.

The standard barrel will do a 12" group or better. I just got back from my yearly requirement of the rifle range and managed to hit the 12" shot spotter 9 of 10 shots. That other round was the first round from the 500 so no spotter was in place. That was with iron sights and would be much better with the scopes but, we would just break those things. No such thing as a Marine proof scope!

bhale187Thats correct, however I dont think I'd want to lug it around all day at a gun show or as in a you would in a military action. The Bull Barrel adds lots of weight ... even without the butt stock weight (about 4 pounds) it still weighs a little over 12 pounds ... on the bench of course it doesn't matter!

My AR-15 put 30 rds in a 6" target at 100 yds right out of the box. OK...I had to load it.Mudge

I shoot in varmint matches frequently. Friends of mine use the AR15 with high power scopes & hit groups of 1/2 inch (and better) at 100yds & 1 inch groups at 200 yds. This is accomplished with Hbar barrels & handloads. RG
