10mm vs. 44mag vs. 45ACP

I've heard before that the 10mm is nothing but a slightly hot-rodded 45ACP.
I also know that a da revolver firing 44mag hotloads is going to be a mother trying to keep on target for several follow up shots.

Just wanting to get some of your opinions on this, any owners of a Glock 20 (10mm??) Would this be a decent "middle ground" for a backup handgun in bear country. Not quite the power of a 44 but with 15 fast (controlable) shots with a solid bullet?

The 10mm is between the .357 and the 41 mag. I am a big big fan of the 10mm but I don't know if I would use it past Black bear. I have read where they will knock down bigger bear but they wee professionals. In your post you used the word backup so in that case the 10mm should fit the bill for you. As for the Glock.... Well.. I personally don't like them but thats my opinion. Some people swear by them. I swear at them. From what I have seen. Stay with the 9mm Glock (fantastic guns) but anything higher caliber stay away from. Get a used Colt Delta Elite or if you want new get a Witness 10mm. A steel frame always makes me feel better. Good Luck.

....I've got all three, so I'll put the .45 at the bottom of the list for knock down power....then 10mm....and 44mag as the most potent. Have hunted Antelope with the 10mm...a very impressive round. Don't think I'd want to take on a bear with one though.

I agree. The .45 is chambered in higher pressure loads than, say, the .44 Special, but it is still a nice big slow bullet, not a magnum.

The 10mm was designed to equal the ballistics of the .357 and does a pretty good job, except that some LEO's didn't like the added recoil, so the .40 was born, which is 10mm Lite.

A full power 10mm is therefore a lesser load, by all accounts, than the .44 Magnum. If you really want the Glock 20, don't be afraid of it. Everything from the slide rails on up is some of the best quality steel(and best made engineering) you can buy. I've heard of people who hated shooting the 10mm in the Delta finding it comfortable in the Glock 20. I suppose I would feel about equally well armed with a Glock 20 or a 629 Mountain in bear country, with the .44 Magnum getting the edge for power but not for number of rounds. But with all those rounds in the 20 you could drill a pretty deep hole in a bear's head if he had ahold of your leg.

The .45 ACP is out. The traditional handgun in bear country is the .44 Magnum (and up, nowadays). It's better in that role than in defense against humans.

I was watching a hunting show and the guy doing the program was using the 10mm, they were hunting wild boar and he dropped one in its tracks with one shot, granted its not a bear, but it seemed pretty impressive. If it were me, and I was going into grizzley country, I wouldn't "hunt" with anything less than a 44mag. If its just as a back up to a 300 magnum then Id feel ok with anything 45acp or better.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

I've been known to stomp around the woods of Montana with friends aho have a hunting lodge there. I don't hunt but will walk and sit with them. I carry my S&W 29 with Cor-Bon 305 grain solids. Maybe it won't stop a bear but it sure will slow it down. That way I don't have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun the rest of the guys. Vamanos muchachos!!!!

Mudge, how fast are you....want to go bear huntin'

Sorry if this topic is kind of old news for some of you here, I know I've brought it up here at least twice. Main thing that got me thinking about it again was an article I saw in (American Handgunner??I think??) stating that the most common piece on a woodsrunner was a 357 mag. JMTCW....thanks

YOU ANSWERED PART OF THE QUESTION THE 44 IS OUT FOR YOU, YOUR NOT HUNTING WITH IT, IT'S A BACK UP, GO WITH THE 10 M/M, GO WITH THE FULL POWER LOADS 180GRS, EVEN BETTER IF YOU CAN FIND THE 200GR, FORGET THE HP'S YOU WANT PENETRATION. SEEMS YOU NEED A REASON TO BUY ANOTHER GUN, DO IT!! CHECK WITH YOUR GUIDE, IF YOU HAVE ONE.
