Shoot the snake...

One of the guys in the office said that he saw a pretty big snake outside of his house last night. He said threw rocks at it until it went away. I am thinking this snake could come back. Can you shoot a snake?? If so, what king of gun with what cal. would you use?

If you will blame gun makers for every shooting then blame car maker for every car accident.

12 Guage. Does the friend have kids? Is it a rattler? If the answer is no leave it alone. It isn't going to hurt him, what it will do is get rid of pesky rodents that live near and under your friends house(Rats, mice etc.) If he does have hids I suggest using a flat head shovel and slice his head off. Rattler makes for a good meal-Tastes like chicken!

I agree with mkirkland. I have an eight foot black snake living under my deck, and he's my buddy. What I DON'T have is mice and toads. I don't even bother the copperheads myself, see one now and then, but I can understand if someone doesn't want the poisonous ones around their kids and pets. Any gun will do them in if you can hit them.

Snakes, under my deck if I knew it me or him would have to go.Rat shot loaded in a 44 Mag works well.Probably not as well as the 12GA.Alot of people tell me Moth Balls will keep them away,I wish I knew for sure it was true? But I scatter them everywhere around my little retreat.Im not going to say I havent saw one, because I would jinx myself.

I HATE SNAKES. KILL IT NOW!!

If you don't have a shotgun CCI makes shotshells for pistols. You can get them starting in 22LR. A 9mm or .357 Mag to the head should work well. The 22LR has #12 birdshot in it the bigger the round the bigger the shot. They come packs of 10 if I remember right.

Aww now smokeeater..that ain't nice. Next thing we know you'll be hating moskitoes..Seriously, snakes aren't nearly as bad as their reputation, and they do help control the vermin.

I don't know why but I have always hated them (34 years on the planet now). I have gotten better. Years ago I could not stand to look at them in a book even. Now I can watch the movie Anaconda without having to holding a shotgun the hole time.

I do some HVAC & electrical work and my biggest fear is running into one of them under a house. Last week I helped the EMS pick up a guy that got bit by a Masasogawa(sp) rattler in the state park. He is doing OK but may loose his finger that the snake bit. The Conservation Officers think he may have been messing with the snake when he got bit. His fault not the snakes.

    I like 4GodandCountry's idea.

If it's poisonous I'd use my trusted shovel.

Non-poisonous, let them keep eating the mice in the neighborhood.

If your friend lives in the Richmond or surrounding area and shoots the snake, don't be surprised if some well meaning (?) neighbor calls the local PD and reports gunshots. I think they call it illegal discharge of a firearm. The shovel works without restriction.

Yes, and I don't quite know how to take that. Is it that you live close or don't like my feelings about snakes?

I would go .38spl in either a Python, Diamondback or Cobra, .44spl in an Anaconda or Boa, or 9mm in an Asp "Quest For Excellence".

Why does man kill? He kills for food. But not only for food; frequently, he must have a beverage.

I could make you guess but I live close! I have a thing about not killing anything you won't eat but I draw the line with snakes and spiders. I kill every one I see. BTW the wife and I shop at the super wall mart sometimes.

We 12-guaged a rattler Monday dove hunting. The 12 guage is certainly the tool of choice. A close runner-up would be any other gun that's handy when said snake is encountered. As has been mentioned, shovels, rakes, hoes, etc. can be employed to good effect. I knew a fellow once in Arizona whose tool of choice was a Ping putter (or maybe it was a sand wedge), but he wasn't quite right to start with. In my younger days I caught 2 or 3 with lawm mowers, that's pretty impressive to.

You might keep in mind...many non-poisonous snakes will eat the other kind...with the arrowhead shaped head...the kind that will bite you...hehehehee

You might want to keep those non poisonous snakes around. Nothing is creepier than a mouse running through your brand new house and living it up in your pantry ,leaving little sprinkles on your english muffins.

Sounds like some people around here need
to learn about snakes.I kill poison ones
all the time, but I hate to see a non poisonous one killed.

I`ve got a picture of myself with a 6 foot Eastern Diamondback.

    No,it wasn`t in church!

I kill the poisonous snakes with a shovel, axe or hoe. To me it's easier than having to clean the gun. I have killed a few baby copperheads lately and from what I hear the babies are very much poisonous.

Was camping with the wife, and some friends at Lake Pilsbury in northern Kalifornia 31 years ago.Wife and me were sitting at a picnic bench when a 6 foot rattler slithered by our feet.As soon as it was about 10 feet away,i got a long stick and our camp hatchet. The snake crawled up by the drivers side front tire on my 56 Chevy.Took the stick and pinned the bugger down. With a quick slash with the axe,i took the snakes head, along with the sidewall of my tire.Luckly had a spare.Still got the rattles from that bugger.

    Smoker,I believe ya:

    I heard of a man walkin` along a canal,not far from here,came opon a young boy fishin`.He asked the boy"are they bitin"?
The boy said "No,but the worms are bitin`."

Not knowing what the boy meant, maybe just
the kind of thing a boy would say,he kept walking.

When the guy walked back his way,he found the boy dead, and a spilled over stirofoam
cup, with baby cottonmouths all around it.

Apparently the boy found a nest area full of the baby snakes, thought they were worms, caught them for bait, and they all bit him.

    Bee,
That is tragic! Those little ones I've been killing are only about 12 inches and look harmless but when you chop at them they strike with fangs just like the big ones. If you look real close you can see the pits below the eyes. I heard about a guy playing with a baby one he found in his garden and it bit him on the finger, the finger had to be amputated.

218 -- any chance of this "bee'in" an urban -- err, I mean, RURAL legend? I heard the same story when I was 10 in WV, except it was several kids digging for earthworms to go fishing and they all died because they dug up baby copperheads. Sounds "fishey" . . .
