Hobbie: Tweaking Cheap Junk Guns

Has anyone here taken a "Junk" gun and just totally modified it and tweaked it out to that it was actually a real shooter? Just for fun, though you could have gotten a shooter for less money and effort?

I never heard of one, but if you have please let me know. I have a J-22................Yeah... I know. It would be nice to use it for at least 3 consecutive rounds.

Depends on how cheap and how "junk" you mean.....I'm a 1911a1 .45 auto guy, and among my purchases was an Auto-Ordinance .45 (pre-Kahr) which is about universally considered useless junk by the legions of 1911a1 fans worldwide. This particular gun came from a pawn shop, was reasonably cheap, so I bought it. Fortunately, I'm a skilled machinist / amateur gunsmith and quite familiar with the 1911a1 after years of living with them in the Army and tuning my Colts. This gun had all the problems. Front sight flew out. Barrel bushing stuck in the slide due to mis fitting. Mis feeds and jams galore. Slide didn't fit the frame right, barrel didn't fit in the "open" position-it was a nightmare. Well, patience, an equipped home shop, lots of time with my grinding / polishing tools, a couple of cheap new parts, and some new Kimber mags, and now I've got a butter-smooth, combat reliable, under $500 1911a1 that'll pop soda cans at 50 yds as fast as you can pull the trigger...

I thought this was going to be a thread on how to accurize a Jennings .25 ACP.

Every Jennings I have shot hits within 1" of the point of aim at a range of 1". That is a minute of angle shooter right?

OH...we're talking about Jennings pocket pistols? Sorry....I didn't know. But I also have the perfect cure for all the problems related to that pistol. 1) place pistol on its side on a 1" steel plate, preferably on the ground. 2) Get a firm grip on a 10lb. sledgehammer.....you can picture the rest.....

I once owned a Jennings Bryco .380. WHen I sold it the kid I sold it to brought it back the same night with a look on his face that told me he thought I screwed him. "They told me at the range this gun is faulty." I gave him his money back and sold it to somebody else. Truth is, I never shot it that much, but it appeared to be made of zinc and I always wondered if a polish of the feed ramp wouldn't have made it shoot a little better, but it was a true jam-o-matic for me. That's the only junk gun, as I define them, I've ever owned. I enjoyed my Charter Bulldog Pug .44 and while it was no-frills, it was a pleasure to shoot and carry. Sold it reluctantly, wish I had another (in stainless).

By the way, when I ask about a Charter Pug the dealer will always try to direct my attention to a Rossi or Taurus, but I just liked that little Pug with the pocket hammer. Probably weighed under 26 ounces.

I've got one of the Charter Arms 44s in a Target Bulldog. After flattening the rear of the rubber grips with a grindstone, the recoil doesnt hurt the hand. Single action, the gun is real accurate and I've shot 235gr HP Keith hot handloads safely. I'd like to find someone that can do a good D.A. trigger pull on it. The mainspring doesnt have enough omph to dent magnum primers reliably. I bought a bobbed hammer that seems to have more mass but havent tried it out yet.Buy one if you can it's a real hand cannon. I stole mine for $150.

I know, I know. I had the pocket hammer on my 44 Pug and it was great. There was an occasional light primer hit and I thought maybe it was the smaller pocket hammer -- or the range reloads I was probably shooting at the very beginning of my handgun "career." Also the screw above the grip on the frame worked its way loose occasionally, not serious but loose. I now know a little LockTite might have solved that.

When I started in the Gunsmithing business I was told that no matter what you did to a trash can it would allways be just that, A trash can.
