mudge - Don Knotts played the examiner who gave Andy Griffith the "manual dexterity" test wherein Andy bent the two steel rings together into a pretzel rather than manipulating them together and apart per Knotts's instructions. Nick Adams was Andy's sidekick who wanted to be in the infantry rather than the "...danged Aiu Fohce."

X-Ring Iconoclast!!! I agree completely with your analysis. On the subject of the best war movies of all time, I'm surprised no one has nominated "The Rough Riders". Great action flick, authentic weapons, and the portrayal of General "Fighting Joe" Wheeler is priceless. Another great one would have to be "ZULU". I realize it involved the British Army rather than our own...but looking at the accomplishments of those men against great odds and the intensity of the fighting during the battle it makes my list of greatest war movies. Hey Alltheway: I agree 100%. I couldn't wait for Sunday night and the next episode of that great mini-series.Buck Compton from the real Band of Brothers lives just up the road from me. I've talked to him a couple of times and he's just a great old guy. He's a little embarrassed from all the new exposure and fame he's received since the book and mini-series. The local paper did a big spread on him and he's now in big demand for photo ops and such. He threw out the first pitch in a Mariners play-off game, Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day Parade, and so on.Those Easy Co. 506th guys were tough as hell.

I Think We Three Kings was the worst war movie i ever saw. John Wayne Was my child hood hero (like millions of others) i think he can do no wrong. I just saw Blackhawk down and from what i know it seems pretty good. My father is a General in the army reserves and i was taking to him about the movie he thinks that Rangers and Delta force guys would be more perpared for such an event. My Father said that all the special forces guys he knew were not sloppy and were pros.Full metal jacket was also a movie i really liked. That's my 2 cents

Hell, I was never in a war, so I won't pretend to understand what's real and what ain't. The guys I know who were in Vietnam say none of the movies made about it are worth spit, (when they talk about it - sedom). I love history, and I think "Gettysburg" was phenomenal. (also, you all know the guy who built the caissons for that movie, but I won't tell). Though very fictional, I also loved "In Harm's Way". While I'm at it, how about a comedic diversion! "Kelly's Heroes"????

As far as I know John Wayne was a man's man. Some of you must be confusing him with Rock Hudson. I hear Wayne tended to hang out with other "real men", including stunt men and friends like John Ford, Ward Bond, John Huston, and probably Bruce Cabot and even Ernest Hemingway. I could only aspire to be included in a group of "weenies" like that... It took the radiation from an atom bomb test to bring Wayne down, years later. That ain't bad, and probably should make him a war hero too.

I used to feel the same way about HEARTBREAK RIDGE, but I confess the more times I see it the more I like it.

Rob3448:There were no Special Forces involved in Blackhawk Down. Army Rangers and the D-Boys were the ones involved in the Battle of Mogadishu portrayed in Blackhawk Down.Other than a few PJs that tried to rescue people from the downed choppers and some members of the 10th Mountain Division that rode out on the rescue convoy, it was all Rangers and D-Boys.On a different front: I sort of liked GI Jane. I didnt like the political message behind it, though, but it was still mildly inspirational.I still support the ban on women in combat teams, but I wouldnt be shocked if there were a few who had the natural killer instinct and the overall gumption to pull it off.

bullzeye....you have some bad info there about the special forces. All of Delta's operators are made up of special forces. While technically Rangers are not Special Forces like Green Berets or SEALs or the AirForces Secial Air controllers(admittedly a weak SF group) they are pretty good at what they do. Also within 10th Mountain Div there are more than a few ex-SF guys holding down billets. When we were turning over to 10th Mountain in Mogadishu I saw more than a few 10th Mountain officers with their SF insignia rather than infantry, arty. sigs etc. I was really envious of the CIA guys though....they had some unbelievable toys and an even more unbelievable budget. They used to hang out with us to go surfing and let us(me) play with their toys. Boy did I get into the wrong line of work. Incidently two SEALs I know earned the Silver Star that day for making it from the ambush site through Mogadishu to alert the US headquarters that the mission was going south. In their hearts both Rangers and Marines view themselves as a type of special forces. They both do superb work in their respective areas. Beach
