If you could see a new gun in any "obsolete" chambering...

I'd like to see more US sporting guns chambered in 8mm Mauser. Not really obsolete, but no one does it. I also would like to see replicas of European black powder cartridge rifles, like the current replicas of US cartridge guns. How bout you all?

I'm no pro at these obsolete cartridges, so I did a quick scan of them in Cartridges of the World, and I came up with one I can find a specific use for, the 256 Winch. Magnum, and I'd like to see it in probably the same gun it was in before, but not the Ruger, the Marlin, I think a high capacity lever action varmint gun would be slick for small game, and in a pinch, who knows what else.

Here is mine:Remington Model 7, Stainless and synthetic, chambered in .358 Winchester.Mount on it a compact low-powered variable scope, maybe 1.5 to 4X.I think it would be one heck of a little woods rifle for deer, black bear, hogs, most anything under 200 yards. And I don't understand why Remington doesn't make it anyway.

I would like to see Remington chamber the .338-06 in its 7600 pump rifle. Would make the great close in cover rifle with reach when you need it. Would also like to see Remington chamber the 6.5x55 Swede in both the 7600 and 7400 rifles. More "oomph" than the .243, less recoil than the .308 or 30-06.

I would love to see a repro M95 in .405 or .40-82. I can't afford an original M95 or M86, but I've owned them in the past & the .40-82 is one of the finest shooting cartridges I've used. Them whom have not shot it, do *not* scoff - I used to shoot woodchucks out to 150 yards w/ my M86 & buckhorn sights. Plus I know one person on this board who's shot my loads and can speak to their accuracy. And the .405, if good enough for TR, is good enough for me.

I'd like to see the 25 Stevens rf in light single shot rifles and light revolvers like the 3 1/2"-4''S&W Kit Gun.Old time writers thought a lot of this cartridge for small game.

Iconoclast, you must not have seen the January '02 edition of the Rifleman. Winchester is once again offering the '95 in .405.Now wipe that saliva off your chin and grab your credit card.

250Savage...don't quite get the credit card out yet. I, too, began salivating at the prospect of the 1895 Winchester in .405 but it really hasn't arrived yet. Maybe in a few more months. It appears that the numbers of rifles being distributed will be minimal to ensure very high prices...very disappointing. And I can attest to the accuracy of Iconoclast's reloads! Using my 110 year old Winchester 1886 in .40-82, I outshot(from the offhand position) all those pathetic scope rifle shooters at our deercamp this year....yeah yeah I probably shouldn't have turned their scopes up to 12 power before they shot! Seriously though with Iconoclast's loads in my .40-82 I center punched the 10 ring.Listening to that huge bullet going down down range...especially in a heavy overcast sky is neat..... it sounds like an old locamotive just chugging out to its target. I know if any of you have any really exotic calibers and don't reload in them Iconoclast can probably hook you up for a truly outstanding deal!!!(Iconoclast I still owe you a steak dinner when we get together... you are the man!) The 405 always seemed to be the right caliber for the '95 Winchester.Photos of Texas Rangers with '95 carbines(30-40 Krag?) makes me think a Texas Ranger commorative carbine in the correct caliber might be a good one.Since the '95 was also made in 7.62x54 Russian a reissue, but not the military style rifle, would let a guy go nuts with all that cheap russian ammo around.

Beach, I don't load for others any more and have sold off most of my 'exotic' tooling & components. The ammo you received was loaded many years ago; it was gratifying to know that it still shot so well - and in a different rifle. The .40-82 is, IMNSHO, one of the best of the old BP rifle rounds. We may have better technology today, but I don't know that the accuracy is better until you get into the upper reaches of competitive shooting.
