A magnanimous offer indeed. You seem to be describing a Model 1861 Special Musket, which was a contract arm for the government. These can get quite valuable.First, let's measure the barrel. Most likely it's 40" which is the most common variant. It's .58 caliber. Obviously, the lockplate dates it to 1863 which should be marked behind the hammer. The lockplate should also have US / COLTS PT.F.A.MFG CO / HARTFORD CT on it. Value is enhanced if the inspector's initials are still visible, and the cartouche on the left side of the stock opposite the lockplate.A good portion of these were also state marked, most often encountered is N JERSEY.The 1863 production had case-hardened lockplates with the balance finished in the white. If you have the angular bayonet, that's a big plus.On big-name collectables from the Civil War area, "excellent condition" is a very vague term. Advanced collectors want to know EXACTLY what condition the gun is in. Value will be from $1500 - $3500. Take the gun to a recognized appraiser and get a professional hands-on evaluation.
