Combat Video Game Gurus/Geeks

I'm not much of a gamer but I'd like the "professional" opinion of combat gamer gurus on the new official video game of "America's Army". Pre-order this FREE game if you are interested and tell me what you think. I pre-ordered on myself but I'm a little out-of-touch with the gaming crowd so simple 2-D graphics will probably "wow" me.

Get it at www.americasarmy.com

    Well, I pre-ordered the game.

The movie looked pretty cool as far as graphics go, but we'll have to wait and see how the game performs.

Hell, you can't * too much when it's free though!

I used to play Rogue Spear, but I recently found that the "Half-Life" series of games are alot better. Both the graphics and the game play is alot better. The one I play mostly is "Day of Defeat". Its Half_life but its set in WW2. The MG-42 is alot of fun. And if you get good at Half-life, you can go back to Rogue Spear and really kick butt.

As a former Counter-Strike player, I've gotta say that it isnt that realistic.

The weapons are well modeled, but the damage scale is ridiculous, and there's several inconsistencies that are really obvious to anyone who's ever used one of those weapons.

First of all: The damage is just silly. I dont care what kind of round you're shooting, a man who's just been shot in the face with a 9mm submachine-gun round does not walk slowly backwards, weave slightly, and cover his face with his hands. That's ridiculous.

The reaction to wounds is also ridiculous. If a man has been wounded several times (or even once), I seriously doubt he will totter in pain for a few seconds, then immediately return to full ability.

Other things: For the longest time, until the most recent patch came out, they didn't differentiate between 7.62x39mm for the AK-47 and 7.62 NATO for the Steyr Scout and the G3 sniper. It was just "7.62", it was all the same velocity, and it was all interchangable.

Even stupider: The FN P90 submachine gun was listed as firing .338 Lapua Magnum rounds instead of 5.6mm sub-rounds. I got a good laugh from that one, a little P90 that weighs about 4-lbs shooting .338 Lapua Mag full-auto. One pre-release look over by someone with a basic grasp of firearms would have fixed that.

Another thing: the action on the AK-47 opens to the wrong side (it's always open in the direction of the shooter, no matter which side you're shooting from) and when your character loads a magazine, he just pushes it straight up and in, and starts shooting.

Must be one of those new fangled AK-47 mags. The kind where they snap straight-in like an M-16 mag and dont have to be racked to load the first round.

But I doubt the legions of pimply faced CS players give much thought to that. You see someone 50 feet away, just empty the magazine and he's dead. Wish it was that easy.

Check out Tactical Ops -- it started life as a Mod for Unreal Tournament, now it is a commercial product. If you have Unreal Tournament, you can still download the latest beta.

Ghost Recon and it's add-on Desert Siege rule the roost!

I'm impressed at how "Mod-friendly" the GR and DS add-on are. Most games (Rogue Spear!) don't take kindly to aftermarket Mods. The GR series is specifically designed to accept them!

i just acquired Ghost Recon and am not a gamer in general, but I've gotten through the weapons training and run a mission at the beginner (recruit) level, where my B team took 4 out of 5 casualties (the sniper lived) and I got shot on brushy terrain while trying to get around a high ridge to reach the enemy encampment to reinforce the other two teams I had sent ahead. I wound up on my back lookin' at the sky. Given that I practiced with everything from M16 to grenade lobbing to claymores to stationery machine guns, oh, and anti-tank rockets, I'd say for a beginner it was pretty cool. The sound is good also. I like it also because the PC instructions are clear and the keyboard is mapped for convenient game control, though there are enough controls that it takes some practice to remember what controls what. The graphics are good, the troops look good. I've only scratched the surface, but there's no rush. As I said, I'm not a videogamer by nature. I don't find all that "back to square one" stuff very rewarding, just nerve wracking.

Well counter-strike is the most realistic game out there. They updated it and its alot better! Also, in order to make the game a bit of fun they have to make a bit of changes of what its really like when your shot. Lastly, ever heard of headshots? When your shot in the face you die instantly.

    No s***?

I think logic would dictate that a face-shot with just about any caliber (well, maybe not a .22 Short) would guarantee death.

The point I was making was that in the game, the weakest caliber they've got is 9mm. It often takes 2 face or head shots to kill with a 9mm round in that game. And the fact that they created an animation (covers face, totters backwards) to show that you have been shot in the face and somehow survived is ridiculous to me.

I got out of playing CS mostly because I got sick of the 12 year old punks with T1 net connections and names like "[iZg]L33t 5uPaf1i hAxx0r" who want to lecture me on their vast knowledge of the AK-47 and weapons in general.

I'm sure there are exceptions. I just never met any. For the most part, Counter-Strike is like paintball. It wasnt designed for it, but it's been overtaken by kids who's mommies wont let them have any real guns. "No Red Ryder for you! You'll put your eye out!"

They also tend to get rather offended when I say "You dont say....the AK-47 does that? NO S**T! I OWN ONE!"

Tactical ops used to be good... I really hate the new version

Counter Strike always sucked except for LAN parties.

Ghost Recon is a pretty good game. My copy doesn't work online though...

I like the Commandos series, Men of Courage, Above and Beyond the Line of Duty, Behind Enemy Lines.

Of course Army Men I and II is always fun if you like melting those little plastic german soldiers.
