IT'S WHAT PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THEMSELVES THAT MAKES THEM AFRAID.

Whether or not a particular animal will attack a human being has no bearing on its status as a protected species.

The woman who was attacked was wearing a full wetsuit with flippers and was swimming in the ocean with a pod of sealions. She looked like prey, acted like prey, and hung out with other prey. She was the slowest one, so she became prey. It is not like the shark swam into her home while she was eating dinner and bit her on the leg.

Shark attacks are not common, but they are not unheard of, either. Just about once each year, some surfer is attacked by a great white shark off of the California coast. These attacks are well-publicized. She was an intelligent person (college professor) and should have known better. My heart goes out to her family, one of whom was on the beach, watching as the attack happened.

Ideas are far more powerful than guns. We don't let our people have guns. Why should we let them have ideas?

    I agree with the dog.

She took her chances, she should have know better, and she lost.

I feel for her, her family and all.

I used to hunt sharks, got one jaw as a trophy. You would think that there is an easy way to attract them. Well, there aint. Used chum, blood, (funny story here, one time I was in a tournament, couldn't find any blood, called a mortician, he said I was sick). We used 10+ pound bluefish for bait on a #10 to #15 hook).

    I miss those days [V]

If its your time, it is.

Talk about narcissism: Summer 1989, I was surfing off of Carpinteria, California. While sitting in the water waiting for the next set, I saw some people on the beach pointing and waving at me. I thought that maybe seeing an old guy in a wet suit sitting on a longboard was amusing to them, so I waved back and gave them a "thumbs up". However, as I looked back over my shoulder to line up the next wave, I noticed a large dorsal coming out of the water about fifteen feet behind me. I put two-and-two together fast and "went" in my wetsuit. Two more fins appeared, then another. I started to laugh. Dolphins! The people were simply pointing at a school of dolphins passing behind me. Makes ya' humble (and feel real stupid).

We have an area just north of me (Halfmoon Bay) that is a hot bed for Great whites, But like most of the Surfers, and Para Sailers They know where the Seals and Sea Lions bed. Most, if not all just stay out of thoes areas. But I got to tell ya they are something to watch!
when they get hold of a seal, its very explosive. I have only seen it happen a handful of times. The last one about 3 years ago the shark must have breached about 5' out of the water.

We had one local guy that was doing Great white shark tours/research which was cool. But the guy was chumming the water only about 1/4 to 1/2 mile off the coast. CDF&G shut him down pronto beacuse of the threat it was posing to beach goers, and surfers.

DWS That is a cool spot! I don't surf myself but the wife did. She took me out ther once to watch all the Big Dogs when the 50 and 60 footers come in.

Man If you got to surf that! my hats off to you! I would be terrified!
The wife had a classmate or was a friend Mark Soo that was one of the world class guys out there in the competition when the waves hit.

But I understand he did not get out of the tube on 60 some odd foot wave and got taken to the bottom. Scary stuff!

FrancF: I only watched the 40-60 foot stuff, but predictable 10-15 footers made most trips worthwhile. Broke a Velzy 9'6" out there my first time out.

Like we used to say: "Civilization ends at the Low Low Waterline; after that you become part of the food chain."
I had a Zambesi River Tiger shark follow me through the surf once; he turned outbound when the water shallowed. I always wondered if I had been on his menu or whether he was just curious, but it still scared me way too much. Beach
