Autobid is Killing Me

I am trying to buy a Spanish Mauser. I have big on it 14 times, and every time, I have been taken to the cleaners by autobid.

I got in on the gun at about $220, now it is up to $450. I give up and will let autobid guy have the gun. Very nice rifle.

At least, I made him pay for it.

There appears to be a disconnect between what you want to pay and what someone else thinks the gun is worth.

That was a 'perfect' conclusion you drew there.

Well, I was going to town at $220. In fact, I got in at $190 and I had the auction won! I thought I would steal the Mauser.
Then another guy outbid me, and then I outbid him! So I had it won at $205. That would have been a steal.

Then, autobid guy kicked in and I have bid 14 more times, to no avail. Autobid guy prevails.

Gonna have to let this one go, there are lots of Spanish Mausers out there. Although this one does have "OBERNDORF 1895" on the receiver ring. I love that German writing.

C'es la Vie, I have to bail out, $450 plus $50 shipping, too expensive.

I've always found the best strategy to buy something at auction is to bid the maximum I want to pay for it, and then let it ride. No fretting, hand wringing or worrying about "autobider" (which is exactly how your own bid is input) YMMV.

I couldn't stand it. I just bid $460! To no avail, autobid beat me again.
I am out of this auction as of now, and I mean it!

    I couldn't stand it, I bid $470.
And autobid beat me again! This is it, I promise I will not bid again.
But I am making autobid guy pay in coin of the realm. I think he is over-paying for this gun, not sure if this is some exceptionally rare Mauser, or what.

its hard to win when some one with $$ is determined to win even they over pay its the "WIN" and the " will lot loose" and "I will show them " personality driving them

Exactly right... You are not sneaking up on a cut line with a plane, you are bidding.

By the way Allen you are close....

I had this same discussion with a person on Sunday who was bidding on the NRA Airboat. The guy that told me he really wanted it bid his max and walked away. 2 other people that also told me they really wanted it tried to sneak up on his bid and then got busy in meetings. I even walked over to their booths and let them know that they had been outbid and there was only 5 minutes left to bid.

That guy that really wanted it is picking it up on his way home from Atlanta....

I bet the other guy put in a round number like ... 500

I get emails about once a month from people that are MAD AS HORNETS because they think I'm over here "upping" the bids and making them bid just a little bit more.

"I'm telling you I'm NOT bidding any more...you can just keep it! I'm through playing!"

You can't explain how things work to them with 1 min left in an auction.

When somebody wants something as much as you do but may have set his limit higher. Like a good poker bet sometimes you got to know when to fold them.

GB's "15 minute rule" is GREAT. You want frustration, get "bid sniped" on some of the other auction sites. You can't push buttons fast enough to beat a sniper program.
I'll admit that when you're working, even the 15 minutes doesn't help but an auction is an auction and the bidder with the $$ wins.

It is up to $505. A new guy has come in and outbid the autobid guy who kept beating my offers.

    Seven minutes left.

All you have to do is want it more than everyone else. $500 is not a lot for a good rifle.

$505 that is crazy for that gun. Those things used to sit in barrels at pawn shops and sold for $50.

I guess I have lived to see it all now. I never thought I would see an Arasaka 7.7 jap sell for more than $25. But they are selling for big bucks now.

    Crazy world

That's not a lot for that rifle. The market for honest un molested early mausers is in demand AND its not 1980 anymore...Some of you guys sound like some that come to my shop and are shocked that they cant get a rebuild engine for their model A or T for what they paid 40 years ago..Go figure.
