My Mauser 71/84 came in the mail yesterday. It is one of the Gibbs rebuilds. They say not to shoot it but I suspect they are just trying to cover their own rears as everything is mechanically quite tight and crisp, bore is great... only problem is there is a fair amount of pitting on the underside of the barrel and reciever (they said not to take the barrel off the stock either but pooh to that, I wanted to play with it!) but none of it is more than about a half a millimeter deep and since I'll just be shooting black powder out of it, I'm gonna give it a shot... literally. Will try via tire and string method first and post results.

That's what they say in their warranty card, on their brochure, and on their websight... both for the 71/84 and the Gew. 88. Hooey.

Oh yes, they also say that when shooting ANY firearm, handloaded ammunition should never be used; only high quality civilian or military ammunition is safe. Bull!

JONK......I implore you!!! Don't shoot it!!! I worked for Gibbs "rebuilding" those things.Val Forget,(owner) bought 40,000 of them from Nicaragua. (By the ton if he was smart.) I spent month's pulling apart those pieces of s--t and turning the parts into "slightly" better pieces of s--t. I wouldn't fire the best one I ever built!!!!If you feel you MUST fire it, get a LONG string and hide behind something SOLID.Mudge the gunsmithps. FYI. Collectors kept asking for matching #'s. That's a laugh. The rifles were stored on one side of the country and the bolts on the other side,(they're VERY paranoid about the peons getting their hands on firearms that work) and by the time I got through putting parts together, I was lucky if 2 or 3 pieces had the same #.
I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!

Hey mudge-Thanks for the advice man, but I am going to try it out as I really want one of these for shooting and the action and bore are so nice. Also, pitting shouldn't hurt the gun's functioning as there is none in the chamber region, just on the rear of the reciever (mostly on the tang and far left rear reciever wall) and some on the barrel. I've shot other antqiue BP guns with this much pitting of far older age with no trouble. What I"ll do is this. I'll use the tire/string method from about 50 yards away behind an overturned shooting bench made of 4X4s and fire a full ten rounds of max loaded ammo, five BP and five smokeless as per reloading manual info for "max loads". If it shows no signs of trouble I'll assume all is ok. If something DOES let loose, I've seen barreled actions floating around on the net and some parts from gunpartscorp, and I will replace whatever needs it.Anyone else shoot any of these?

Just wandering-- what if it takes 5 shots before it blows?

Not only will I fire more than 5 shots via tire and string, I'll use both max smokeless and blackpowder loads. That should take care of it. Seriously though, this is high quality German steel from Krupp and the like. Even if it did sit in some Nicaraguan wharehouse for a hundred years, it was a quality piece of weaponry when made and a little surface pitting and rust doesn't change that. Some Civil War Confederate musket made of pig iron is safe and this isn't? Gimme a break. Still, I will play it safe and 'proof' test the gun as described.Anyone else out there fire one of these?

    Headspace checked?....just a thought.
"ANY" EXCUSE IS A GOOD REASON TO BUY "JUST 1 MORE".& VICIE-VERSIE!

That brings up a good question. How do you have headspace checked on a gun with such an obscure chambering? For my .303, 06, 8mm Mauser, etc., I just bought the go/no go guages and checked it myself. I frankly doubt that headspace will pose a problem with blackpowder loads and high quality Bell brass, but you are right, it is worth checking.
