Guy shot himself at the range

I was out shooting on Friday. I was at the 100 yard range, when someone came running over from the 50 yard range to ask if anyone had a cell phone; some guy had shot himself. The bullet went through his right hand, entered his right front side, and exited his right rear, all above the waist. There wasn't much bleeding and he was still speaking when the medics took him away. The gun was a Jennings J22 using Aguila SSS ammo. It jammed and he had the gun pointed towards himself; while trying to clear the jam it went off. He had bought the gun to teach his girlfreind to shoot; she vows she will never touch a gun again. Talking with another range member who actually saw it happen, he said the guy was waving the gun around, walking in front of the firing line without asking for a cease fire, shooting at tin cans (not allowed at our range) etc. In short he was a bit of a *; he certainly didn't know what proper methods for clearing a jam are. I feel bad for him but you reap what you sow. He was taken to a local hospital but life flighted to Toledo just in case as the local place is pretty small. Good lesson on "Always keep the gun pointed downrange."

hope he makes it...but someone as arrogant as what you made this guy sounds really shouldn't have a gun to begin with. All he did was give the rest of us a bad name and turn one more person against guns.

hope he makes it...but the damage is already done.

I hate it for the guy,I see several problems, one the Range Instructor should have Intervened when he became careless. Two the antis will probably add that to there statistics X 10.Three the girl he was teaching will probably never pick up a gun again,we just lost another comrad, and her well being most of all may be in harms way because she wont own a firearm.Good one SP LMAO

I just wander if the reason some people are unsafe with firearms is they weren't raised around them. Even as little kids, we had toy guns that fired projectiles. Some fired plastic bb's, some plastic discs, some little sucker tipped arrows and things of that nature. Our toys looked real and fired and had the ability to hurt and these were what we played with day after day. We learned basic marksmanship and safety with these toys. If you shot your little bro in the head with a spit covered sucker bullet you got your backside thrashed.

When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....

We don't have a full time range safety officer; there is a guy who fulfills this role in matches but generally, members are left to take care of themselves.

THe gun had jammed repeatedly from what an eyewitness said, and each time he cleared the jam and then reloaded. I might point out he is about 40 and his girlfriend is also. He should know better!

Sideline- his car has both front lights bashed out, is about 30 years old, has spider cracks in the windshield, and a shotgun blast to the trunk. His girlfriend seemed pleasant enough but looked a bit trailer trashy. In short, the type that gives gun owners a negative portrayal of a stupid dumb bubba. The gun was rusty. I might also add that it blew up, whether because his had was covering the muzzle or some other reason I don't know.

Never judge a book by its cover jonk.... whether or not the girl was a bit "trailor trashy" or not, cannot be judged by appearances... and what the he** is trailor trash anyways?... Someone who lives in a trailor park?...how bout condo trash? duplex trash? bungelow trash?.. labels make me ill..
Some of the richest live in trailors in Florida.. drive rust buckets, etc... while some of the poorest live in big homes, drive caddies... have boats.. etc...
    You just cant tell anymore....
I hope the guy is okay and learns from his experience...Thank God I have a great teacher... my husband..

Yea roses I know several that meet that bill.............but a jennings with two (2) pass throughs , WOW....................
Someone at the range should have interveined if it happen as above.
The anti's love this stuff............All we can do is hold our
heads up high and go on.............
I hope he's doing well......but gives up all his weapons..........
Sounds like hes four or five cards short of a full deck........

I have had a few jams myself with my 10/22. I would NEVER point the gun at myself, or anyone else. After waiting 20 seconds or so, I would remove the round. I could see that the round had been struck by the impression on it, and not fired. The thing I don't understand is how it could fire later, if not on the inital firing? Is there something smoldering around in there? I would think if anything was hot, it would fire then, or never.

I hope you have another range to go shooting on. In todays society and anti-gun climate, combined with law-suit hungry lawyers, I wouldnt be surprised to see your range closed very soon. Most likely the owner of the range land will be facing a law-suit, as well as a problem with his insurance company, depends on the man who was shot, and the police report.

Its quite interesting to see the "Profile" of the accident waiting to happen ,its so quite common you can see it comming sometime a try at prevention agravates it ....

A similar Guy in the practice of revolver belt toting fast draw tried to do the same with a cal.45 1911 well his nuts ended spreaded all across the floor of the range ,I will never forget his face .....
Quite hard to realize is too late to turn back the events...
and not taking example the incident repeated itself with another shooter in the same place a week after!!! Glad I was not there then ...... but no more belt draws for anyone else in the range.

I prefer to avoid "risk" ranges now ....If I see something not right I just pack and go....

If my gun does'nt fire how am I supposed to know if there's a bullet in it if I don't look down the barrel?

Here's the beautiful part- the land is owned by NASA. We lease it as no private owner may own land within osomany miles of a nuclear reactor, which NASA Plumbrook, Sandusky OH has. So they lease us the land at $5 or $10 per acre per year or some silly low price; I know we never pay more than $10,000 per five years for 500 acres. So while anti gunners may shut down the range, I doubt it as the people at NASA know us well and I believe a few are members.
