Know what a Sleeper is?

Have you ever heard of a car refered to as a sleeper. Its a rev'ed out mussle car, with no outward appearance as such. Like taking a Pinto, and dropping a 351 under the hood.

Well I was wondering if the same concept could occur with competition shooting. Take a Mauser you shoot in military match rifle comp. Have a match barrel install and milled to put all the origianal furnature back on the gun. Have a match trigger. Have the stock weighted and balance. The action polished. The firing pin replaced with a titanium one, and a more powerful spring. The front sight relplaced with a thinner one. The action re bedded. Special handloads.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

Sure, you could do that. Two problems though. The gun wouldnt shoot as well as others that you put all that time and money into modifying, after you put all the original furniture back on it. Secondly, if you were going to use this gun, you couldnt use it in a military competition for period rifles, meaning you'd be going up against guns that should be able to shoot much better. What would your advantages be then? You might put your opponent lying beside you at ease until about the second or third shot at the most, then he'd be on to you.
I'm glad you broght this up, because I think I might thin my front sight on my Swede., now that you mention it, I think that would make a big difference in seeing the target better. Thanks for talking of this! Ryan

Sleeper? Hmmmmmmmm.................my wife, she sleeps all day long. I don't know if it's an iron deficiency or a failure to give a s**t.

    Will270win,
I have a friend of mine who tells me the same thing. I forgot what he told me was the problem, but if you want, the next time I see him I'll ask.

Maybe your wife should email me, and talk to my wife, seriously. My wife has been through similar situations in her own personal life, and since your wife is a Marine wife also, they may have something to talk about. Let me know via email.

A doctor in my home town mechaniced for a hobby. Took a VW (in the late 60's), pulled the rear seat and moved the firewall up behind the front seats and dropped a T-bird engine into it. I don't know how he worked out the trany and suspension changes, but when college students in souped up VW's wanted to give him a run he sure smoked 'um. Now that is a sleeper!

Awesome! That sounds like a kicker. Some friends of mine in Fl put a 350 into an S-10. Was alot of work but it ran like the dickens! Blew out a rear end or two before they got it right.

Round these here parts we have sleeper's called Sarge guns. Cause Sarge is a gunsmith, and every gun he owns for some reason shoots sub-moa. He sold a Remington 788 .243 for cheap cheap cheap. The guy that bought it came back with he's first 100yd group using factory ammunition. Just under 1/2". Not bad for a hunting rifle.

Had a friend who had the ultimate sleeper car. How about a '54 Plymouth Mayflower 4 dr with a 426 hemi!! Really ratty looking piece of crap to look at. Only dead giveaway was a single 6 inch exhaust in the middle of the back bumper and the 10" cheaters.

    will...
Have your wife email me at barefoot966@yahoo.com. Ever since I've had my first kid I've been in this cycle of added weight, depression, sleep problems, tiredness, added weight...... I go tomorrow night to have a machine adjusted to cure my sleep apnea, and they suspect that my problems will all probably diminish. I know it's frustrating for you and sometimes hard to understand, but she probably can't control any of it, it's a real medical condition.

    PEACE..., through superior firepower.

Let's go back a couple of more decades to when I started with a B-61 Thermodyne and a duplex. Now that was a truck. My father taught me how to drive with a LJ Mack with a quadra-plex. Told me if I could master that then he would let me drive a car.

    Hello Leeblackman

Your post made me chuckle a little bit at first - first thing I thought about, when turning an old rifle into a sleeper - was (excuse my mind for racing in all directions...) for instance take a .376Steyr cartridge barrel to an old 6,5*55...

But yup, I see that a lot here in Greenland.
That old Enfield cal. 303Brittish rifles are converted to match-grade rifles that shoot just as good as the old rifle.
It is then given a match-type or diopter sighting-system instead.
We can buy those rifles for 250$ US at the most..
Cal. .303Brittish is still a popular caliber here, I believe the cartridges are still manufactured of Sellier & Bellot in both FMJ and SoftPoint bullets.

    Regards
    Peter E J
    Greenland.

PS : Old not-modified original Enfield .303 Britt rifles are sold for about 35-50$US, some people here buy them for reindeerhunting.
Buy one rifle and a pack of cartridges, go learn how to shoot with it (reserving 3-5 bullets for the hunt).
After the hunt, they throw away the spare bullets or shoot them for fun - takes out the bolt and burrying the rifle where they shot the reindeer. (because it weighs too much for them to wanna take it back, or because it's so cheap they'll just boy one more next year. Some just chucks it into the water when sailing back home..)

I love my silenced .22 Anshutz rifle =o) Now also my Steyr Scout in .308W. ;o_
    Those guns are YUMMMYYYY !

I don't know why you'd bother. I've personally seen original 03 Springfields, 96 Swede Mausers, and K-31 Swiss carbines shoot well under 1 MOA at 100 yards, and saw one guy with an 03 shoot a 1/2 MOA at 200 using all match components in his reloads. This simply by floating the barrel, correcting headspace if needed, sooting the sights, and practice. None of the guns were in "Mint" condition, but all had pearly mint bores. I firmly believe that most milsurp guns will shoot more accurately than their owners depending on condition.
