1911 Autoloaders

I am in the market for a 1911 autoloader. I have a revolver and now want an autoloader. There is a fairly active IDPA program in my location that I might get involved with. The primary purpose of the autoloader is for "plinking" forms of entertainment. Are there any suggestions to guide my decission? Are there any brands that I should look for or avoid? Suggestions on caliber? Are there any safety features that I should look for? Any suggestions are appreciated.

I personally would opt for a Kimber if you can afford it, best quality for a production firearm. Colt came out with a copy of it's series 70 pistols that they made in the 1970's, if they're as good as the old ones that would'nt be a bad choice either. As far as caliber is concerned, the .45 acp is by far the most popular, but there are a fair amount of .38 Super's out there too, I believe it's just a matter of personal choice.
by the way, welcome to the board and hope you stay around for awhile.

If youre planning on plinking and maybe getting into light competition go 38 super. I do a lot of mixed shooting and as for speed, or steel 38 super is faster and easier to handle. Cheaper too. I load some light 45 (200gr RN with 3.5 gr of Clays@ ~760fps) and they are fun and easy to shoot, but its still not as simple and fun as 38 super. My carry is 45 though.

You'll hear it a lot on this board: Go Kimber.
I build my own 1911's , but I agree that Kimbers are fine weapons. Never go with Charles Daly. Have fun and enjoy!

For competition shooting, I too would recommend a .38 super due to thier lower recoil.
For all other shooting, I'd take a 10mm! Kimber makes a nice one:

Springfield Armory is produceing some very high quality 1911A1's.There backed by a 100% lifetime gurantee and their great shooting guns.Rob Leatham won every major championship in 2002 season with his. Also the FBI Hostage Rescue Team carry the Springfield (TRP)Tactical Response Pistol.I have a TRP and a 1911A1 Loaded and there both great guns.My only complaint is it takes some time breaking them in.Good Luck!

I really like my springfield 1911-A1, but there is a member here that posted about having problems with their customer service. I don't remember who it is though.

I just don't understand what y'all want one of those old antique designed, big old slow bullet shooting 1911s for. About the only ones that I would advise you against would be one of the "old" (pre-Kahr) Auto Ordnances or Llamas.

One of the licenced Colts from Argentina (Modelo 1927) is a Colt made with Swedish steel. They can be had (at last look <$400) fairly cheap and you don't have to pay for the gimmick crap. Maybe a barrel and bushing if you really want one. You can add trick stuff if you want as it is a 1911A1 through and through.
I have had a couple and no complaints.

Be carefull with the load data mentioned above,

    I load some light 45 (200gr RN with 3.5 gr of Clays@ ~760fps)

that would not be a legal IDPA load for the CDP Division. You must have at least a 165,000 power floor. That load would only give you about 152,000.

The 1911's are great guns and fun to shoot. I prefer my Kimber's. If you are serious about the IDPA thing go with the 45 ACP. Comes in handing on some of those heavy steel poppers.

On the down side, check with your local FFL dealers. In the past month, two of my local dealers have dropped Kimber and refuse to sell their product. They both said that Kimber's customer service has taken a dive. I don't have any personal experience with Kimber's service, just passing along so info.

I would also recommend a Kimber, if you are willing to spend the money. I have a kimber tactical pro and I Love it. My next choice will be a wislon combat but i have a cash flow problem i have to fix first.[:D]

Yup, I to would love to have one of those Wilson's. But as you said, Wilson Combat and cash flow problems do not go together.

Next time you come to Richmond HQ look me up. You're welcome to shoot any of them.
