Colt Mustang Pocketlite .380

I recently purchased a Colt Mustang for my wife to carry. I didn't have any confidence in the .25 Bauer that she was carrying. She is a small woman, so the size of the pistol is an issue. I have seen these guns at the shows here in Texas for around $500. Amazingly, I found one in a pawn shop for $289. I looked under the slide and down the muzzle for wear. It looked to have been fired very little.

Took it to the range and put 100 rounds of Winchester Silvertips thru it with no problems at all.

Question: This is our first .380 and I need some info about the best self defense cartridge in this caliber. I have 85 grain Silvertips in it now. Anyone have experience with the Hydra-Shoks or similar?

Although I am a Cor-Bon fan, I have selected Triton for my Pony Pocketlite. Both Cor-Bon and Triton are very good, but I give the edge to Triton.

While I favor the double-action Pony to the Mustang, you have one of the few .380 pistols with a locked breech, and the recoil will be substantially less than with a PPK or other blowback pistols. Be sure your wife undertands the manual of arms with the single action Mustang. Carrying "cocked and locked" may be a little intimidating and dangerous for some.

JudgeColt, since this pistol (Mustang) has a transfer bar is it safe to carry it with a round in the chamber and the hammer down?

When you decide on what ammo to use, take it BACK to the range to make sure there are no problems with the "new ammo". If a situation was to ever occur, that is not a good time to find out that the "new" ammo will not feed in your pistol. Hope she likes the new toy.
