ALERT 5-17-02
***********PLEASE REPOST WIDELY *******
This just in from GOC. ab496 and sb682 are two bills designed to put gun
manufacturers out of business. Do we hold car manufacturers responsible for
car accidents? Do we hold fast food companies responsible for obesity? Yet
these bills will open up gun manufactuers up for all kinds of bogus lawsuits
and hold them responsible for the actions of others.
WE CANNOT ALLOW THESE BILLS TO PASS! ab496 is now up for a vote on the CA senate floor and sb682 is on the CA assembly floor. Both of these bills can come up for a vote at ANY TIME.
The next few days are crucial. Telephone calls and FAXS are good. Emails
don't get through and are automatically responded to. Writing is a little
late.
If the bills pass the houses, the Governor is the next place to voice
opposition.

California Legislative Alert!
ACTION NEEDED NOW
May 16, 2002
The California Legislative Season is drawing to an end and proposed
legislation is reaching deadlines for passage from Committees and on to the
next house. This is the second half of the 2 year session, so bills that do
not make it through the process will die .
We have been dealing with 26 different pieces of proposed legislation this
year alone. Some came from last year, while many were new introductions
this January, 2002. Eleven of the 26 have been killed, suspended, or placed
in the inactive file.
On the move and turning the corner are the bills listed below. As they
advance in the process, it is good for those in opposition to state their
opposition clearly.
AB 496 (Koretz) Expands the law making persons designing or distributing
firearms and ammunition responsible for the willful acts of others.
Location: Now in the Senate to be heard on the floor
Position: OPPOSE
SB 682 (Perata) Increases liability of firearms manufacturers, distributors
and dealers.
Location: Assembly Floor
Position: OPPOSE
SB 1490 (Perata) Adds city attorneys prosecuting civil action suits to the
list of those who may obtain firearm registration records, lists and
information.
Location: On the Senate Floor
Position: OPPOSE
SB 1670 (Scott) Defines approved safety devices for firearms for the
Department of Justice's list. You loose freedom of choice.
Location: On Senate Floor
Position: OPPOSE
SB 1807 (Chesbro) Makes it easier for the police to confiscate firearms if
called to a domestic violence scene and more difficult for the owner to get
them back.
Location: Senate Floor
Position: OPPOSE
When proposed legislation has gone through the entire process and is on the
Floor of the opposite house it started in, it has almost passed. The last
opportunity to oppose comes when legislation is on the Floor. That is when
you notify your legislators of your OPPOSITION. As you can see, that is NOW
for these bills.
The next few days are crucial. Telephone calls and FAXS are good. Emails
don't get through and are automatically responded to. Writing is a little
late.
If the bills pass the houses, the Governor is the next place to voice
opposition.
